Which recovery D Ring to weld on?

I'm not a big fan of "D" rings. But, if you prefer them make sure you buy good ones. The D needs to be closed, not open ended at the bracket side.

This D ring is properly designed with closed loop. The weak point here is the bracket that fastens to the vehicle. This ring is only as strong as that bracket.

Screw pin shackles with appropriate mounts are much stronger and will withstand directional forces better.

I have no idea who sells them but I just made some for my logging winch that I am building. I took some .250 wall x 2" square tube and drilled a 5/16 hole then cut each side with the plasma cutter then welded them on.
To the OP, you can buy the type you have in your second pic that are longer and go through the bumper so you can weld front and back of them. I guess it boils down to your welds for strength.
I bought these when I built a winch bumper for a Grand Cherokee Bumper Clevis - RuffStuff Specialties
I have no affiliation with the co, but they are great to deal with.

Surprisingly enough I made a couple of those must be 15 years ago now and the only difference was in length and that only by a small amount. Width, thickness, hole size and rounded end were identical. GMTA! :D
