My 1999, F-250 SuperDuty, 2 WD, 5.4 liter has electronic 4 speed automatic 4R100 transmission., as well.

From what I can read the motor changes where in 12-98 and the body and drivetrain was a mixed bag until 3-99. But the trans. Is a 4r100 for sure. I have a 2000 model built in 8/99 that the cooling was not run thru the radiator until I changed it. That change in the superdutys was in 2/2000 if I remember correctly.

I ordered my '99 F-350 dually supercab in the fall of '97, received it in early February '98. First dually Superduty that the dealer had come in. 7.3 Powerstroke, 235 hp, 500 tq. and 4R100 trans. It had a different turbo than the later models and had a loud turbo whine under full throttle.

As stated above... 4R100 was the trans I stalled behind the 7.3 powerstroke in the superduty trucks, starting with the '99 mdl year. There are no '98 titled trucks in the superduty line, the ones for '98 are the ones we refer to as 'early '99's, that have the diffrent turbo, intake, injectors, front suspention/track bar. My understanding is that it is simular to the E4OD only made heavy duty and added electronic refinements. But not interchangeable. Good write up on powerstroke.org in the general 7.3 forum area on the early/late differences, I know I didnt list them all.

Here's the TSB's I mentioned in an earlier post.

1. Transmission cooler: TSB # 00-24-4ATF Overheating during severe duty, F-series/Excursion built before 2-6-00:
This only applies to vehicles with the 7.3 or 6.8 engine built before to 2-6-00. Ford is recommending that the radiator be updated on vehicles with transmission damage when the root cause is overheating. The revised radiator has an integral ATF cooler to increase the cooling of the ATF. It is also necessary to install an external ATF filter on the cooler return line. This is not a recall of any kind, only an informational TSB, and there is no indication of warrenty coverage.

2. Noisy Torque Converter 99-3-5
Problem - Some 1999 F-series with the 4R100 transmission may exhibit a rattle/scraping noise in the converter housing area of the transmission case.

Action - To diagnose, place gear selector in park and using a break out box, ground pin 54 (TCC). This will fully apply the torque converter clutch. Cycle the torque converter clutch on and off a few times by applying and removing the ground to pin 54. If the rattle/scraping noise is not present when the converter clutch is applied (pin 54 grounded), replace torque converter.

Affected Vehicles - 1999 F-Series Super Duty, 7.3 DIT, 4R100 and 1998-1999 E-Series built after 1/5/98. Some 1999 F-series 250HD/350/450/550 Super Duty and 1998/1999 Econoline Series (built after 1/5/98) and equipped with 7.3l diesel
