which way to mount R-4 tires

Quick question, but from what I have read on here isn't the wider stance when the valves are on the inside? So you will then narrow your stance slightly by putting valve on the outside. I know stance isn't why you want to do it and I could be wrong here, but thought I would bring it up. I am sure someone can clarify this.

It depends on how the wheel is made. Some wheels can be turned around or swapped side to side with a fixed valve stem. If it has a rim and center disc, you can leave the valve stem on the outside an have several spacing's.

Here are two types.

My L4330 rear tires are filled and there was no way I was going to fool around trying to move +600 lbs of wheel from side to side (yes, they need to be swapped) to a) widen the stance and b) get the stem on the outside. Hence, I spent $125 and my tractor a day or so in the local Kubota dealer to have them do it. Some things are worth doing yourself; moving +600 lb tires isn't one of them.

Now, if I had a 1500 or 2000 lb movable engine hoist and a smooth floor in my shop (I have the latter but not the former) then it might have been doable. In fact, in retrospect, it might have been better to buy the engine hoist and try it myself. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.

Please be careful! We've already had one member's death notice today, let's not have another!

Good luck!

Two sets of hands would be nice but I had no issues rolling around my tires at 5-600lbs on my own. Guess it depends on your tire, a wide R4 tire will almost stand there on its own unattended (although I'm not advocating it of course) , a tall R1 tire would be a widowmaker though. A little common sense will keep you alive, keep it up right and if it starts to lean, let it go.

I took my wheels and tires off and brought them to the dealer for filling. I had no trouble (with my brother's help) getting them in my truck. The dealer used a forklift to put the filled ones in. At home we had to use my brother's tractor to get them out of the truck and on the ground. On the ground, there was no way I could even stand them up. We had to use my brother's tractor again.

The wide R4's stood up by them selves. I rolled them from behind so if if did fall over, I wasn't near it. I rolled them up to the tractor, maneuvered them in place, jacked the tractor up or down to line up the bolt holes and bolted them on. It was very easy.

I would have been much more hesitant with R1's.

Those suckas could kill you.

Having a back hoe with outriggers on the tractor makes a world of difference, even with r4s. I have found that once they have the right pressure in them I can go for many years without checking them. (my valve is on the inside as well) If they leak you will know it, if not don't worry about some sidewall flex....we are only talking 5-10 mph. They will NOT overheat....
It is the front that you will be checking if they look soft....
