I plan on getting a Gator XUV 850D next month. Would like a winch to use with pulling logs, getting the Gator up steep wintry logging roads, etc. Since Gators weigh upwards of 1200# unloaded, will I need a 4000# size? And, I see a lot of references to Warn winches. Do they stack up better for this app than Ramsey, or Superwinch, etc ?

I have a 2500 Ramsey on my HPX and am very happy with it...I don't think you could go wrong with a Warn either. In regards to size the 2500 works fine but then I am not trying to pull the HPX up a logging trail with a load...:)

I installed a 3000lb winch on my rhino it weighs allmost 1200lbs. I use it now for a snowplow blade, but will more then likely use it for logs{small} and getting unstuck :D

i used a 2500 warn on my hpx for over 5 years now it did hold up but it was on the borderline . if i had to do it all over again i would go with a 3500 or a 4000. and go with a warn.

I tried a 3000# from Harbor Freight on my 850D (Don't make the same mistake as it would not pull it on dry ground with the brakes locked). I took it back and got a 10k pound (HF)with 100' of cable for $320.00 (20% off coupon). I mounted it on a slide in hitch adapter and can put it on the front or back (wired with fork lift connections). It may be overkill but for the price I won't get stuck (again).

The downfall is that it weighs about 90 pounds with the adapter and lowers the ground clearance around 1" but it can be used on my truck or tractor also and has significant pulling power.

I would not recommend anything less than 4000#. Believe me if you get the 850D saddle bagged you need some power to get it out. And if you are buried in mud it's even worse.

If you are buying for the 850D only I would recommend the Grizzly 4000 or 4500 for the price. The synthetic rope models are also a plus. Also get a snatch block which will increase your pulling power if need be.

I've been researching the same thing. On another forum (an ATV one) there were a lot of posts on this subject. Universally, the experienced people said min. 4000# for a UTV but not over 5000# due to current requirements. Warn seems to be the class of the bunch but lots of positive comments on the Viper due to the price (under $200 for winch, cover, fairlead, snatch block) and positive comments on the synthetic ropes. Must use Hawse fairlead with the synthetics.

There are alot of knockoff winches out there that are just about identical to the main name brands for about 1/2 the cost. I put a 9500 lb winch on my tractor for logs 3 years ago and it is still working fine. save a ton of $

I know it's an older thread, but fun to see four years ago that there were still positive comments about our VIPER winches. :)
