My dad has an old white 1370 with a Diesel engine. Now that the cold weather has come it is really hard to start (rolls over but just won't fire up). I'm sure that it has a glow plug but I can't find anything in the manual that explains how to operate the glow plug. Anybody out there familiar with these tractors that could help me out?
Thanks

A farmer I worked for had one of these. It's been a long time though since I ran it. Does the key push in to energise the glow plugs? I don't remember. Maybe the key has an accessory position that runs the glow plugs. It'll be something along those lines I believe.

Sometimes on some tractors but I don't know about yours, the key turns backwards to energize the glow plugs.

I found what I believe is a glow plug button beside the ignition switch. Held it in for 10-15 seconds and tractor fired right up. Usually doesn't start in these temps(-7 C). Thanks for the input from everyone.

I am wondering if you have glow plugs or a THERMOSTART.

The thermostart is being listed on ebay for White 1370 tractors

White/Oliver Tractor Manif. Heater Glow Plug Thermostart 1355 1365 137 2-6 7

The THERMOSTART has been around for quite a while. It is sometimes called a flame starter because it works by starting a fire in the intake manifold.

The operating principal goes like this. You power a heating element inside the intake manifold until it gets red hot. The Thermostart has a thermostatically controlled valve in it which, when it opens, drips small drops of diesel fuel unto the glowing element. It smokes a bit then catches fire at which point you crank the engine and the flame is drawn into the cylinders greatly helping the engine to start.

Some brands of tractors have a small fuel tank supplying the thermostart. On those you have to manually fill this tank which will be feeding the thermostart by gravity. Other tractors will have a way to keep the thermostart tank full automatically from the main fuel tank.

Looking at these short youtube videos will help you understand by seeing them work.

On your White 1370 look for something with a heavy electrical wire that is screwed into the intake manifold not the cylinder head itself. If it is there you have a thermostart not glow plugs. Glow plugs will be screwed into the actual cylinder head and there will be one for each cylinder with a heavy wire or plate connecting all the glow plugs together electrically. Glow plugs are all powered from the same wire.

Looking forward to seeing your response to this.

I do have the single heavy gauge wire going to the intake manifold. So it must be the thermostat that you mentioned. Thank you very much for the information. The tractor is at my parents house so I will try to pull the intake off next weekend to check if everything is working properly.
Thanks again.

Glad we got things straight so you can follow the correct path forward.

It would be great if you could post a photo of the engine of your tractor so the next guy with a 1370 has an easier time getting the info needed

I will try to snap a few pics the next time I'm running the tractor
