just purchased my first ford 8n got it home and checked the hydraulic fluid it was white do they make something in white or does this mean water
Soundguy said:white means air or water entrainment.. in your case.. I'd guess water.
also.. it's important to realize that it is not 'hydraulic oil'.
it's a common sump machine, so your oil lubes the tranny, diffy, and hyds.
a UTF meeting the m2c134 spec is good.. or a mineral gear oil in the gl1 / gl3 level.. or a gl4 /5 80w90 gear oil that also carries a MT1 rating, and is yellow metal safe.
to dewater that sump I reccomend you drain it nearly all out ( holds 5g or so.. ) dump in 2 gallons of diesel, a quart of old F atf, and 4 pints of 90% rubbing alcohol, then take her for a drive around the pasture.. don't engage the pto.
then drain her fully.. remove the bottom bolt in the side cover where the dipstick is. add oil dill it dribbles from that hold. may be anywhere from 4.5 - 5 gallons depending on sump cleanliness.
also I suggest getting an I&T fo-4 service manual, master parts catalog and an owners manual..

WOW Soundguy! What a plethora of info you are! (no kidding) Awsome. When I read that I expected what rsewill said as well, get it done then drain and refill AGAIN. Where did you get that info from anywho?I am not contesting it, I want to know he history if there is any...
I have to ask, Why NOT run the PTO as well as other circuits with that mixture in it? Do we not want to purge those fluids out of hoses as well?
