White smoke can mean a "leaned out" condition... A plugged or nearly plugged fuel filter will cause a leaned out condition... (not enough fuel getting through the filter)

It's another thing to check, NOT the only thing that can cause white smoke...

Since white smoke is unburned fuel, which is usually caused by a cold combustion chamber / low initial compression until oil gets circulated to the cylinder walls via the oil rings to maintain a piston ring seal, I don't understand how your theory is valid since starvation of fuel would make the engine difficult, or impossible, to start. Unburned fuel also washes oil from the cylinder walls causing premature wear. It has long been proven that the highest degree of engine wear occurs during startup. Larger engines have pre-lube systems to counter this. There are also aftermarket pre-lube systems available for just about any engine.

I think what he meant was (and I am also curious as well) why a lean out condition results in a white smoke?

Also it is possible that a coolant leak via the head gasket could be causing this?

That would be a white/grey smoke. Much darker in opacity. Also if that condition exists there would be a pronounced knocking (hydraulic locking) for the first few revolutions.
