Do you think these guys would travel to New England? Then I can hire them and just sit home and make money.

Ted,
That is a good idea. We could get the jobs at a decent price and let these donkeys kill themselves and their machines while we sit in front of the TV and watch football. Dude you are a genius!

The madness continues!!! A 194 acre job (see photo it was all this thick) went for $26,156.12!!!!!!!!!

That is a whopping $134.85/acre. The stimulus bill is only stimulating these turkeys to go bankrupt.

Wow. $33.70 /hr . Somebody's getting a heck of a deal.

We just had a bid in the Northeast (90 acres) go for $222 per acres from a company out of California. Last year the same bids were mid $900 and I walked away from bidding because it wasn't enough money(the $900). This is old logging clearcut areas with lots of stumps and big rocks and material in the 8-10 inch range. I would think an acre, to an acre and a half per day.

Good luck to them, I am pretty sure they weren't at the bid showing. They did post pictures but the work is on the back side of the field area that you could mistake for the work area if you didn't talk to the forester.

I was at a bid meeting the other day and it was mentioned that if you weren't in attendance that your bid would be discarded. I noticed that after the meeting they posted the sign-in sheet as an amendment to the original solicitation. I think that there was only seven contractors at the meeting. This will eliminate the "blind-bidding" that goes on.

I noticed that on some contracts they are requiring a bid-deposit now. It is non-refundable upon forfeiture or default of contract. This will help eliminate some of the "low ballers".

Apparently it has gotten bad enough that the feds are finally doing something about it. Hopefully these two measures will make it profitable to do federal work again. I was hoping that the private sector would show positive growth this spring, but so far there is still not much going on.

My brother was abroad last month, on a holiday. A friend of him, also self employed, paged him about a problem: They were getting ALL the contracts they have been offering past 6 months and they all had to be done before summer !
However the bid wasnt valid anymore, and the bids were based upon the situation of barely having work at all in february. My brother didnt want to be bothered during his holiday, and said his mate to update the expired bid with a 40% price increase, that would solve their "problem of luxury"... Guess what ? They still have the same problem, because the bid was accepted, as long as they could do it before the summer holiday !

I just got out bid by a company on the other coast of this country!!!!

How in the world can someone travel that far and still make money???

There is no way that they can do the job cheaper than those of us who are from the general area.

I will be waiting for a default on this one.

Huge machine's, that's how. A job just let in Fl. that was big and went for 202 an acre. Wanted a park like look that a local guy was giving them with planier heads. Big machine's usually run Fecon's, will NOT be what a planier can leave.
The company that won is using 425 hp machine's and will just try and blow thru it. We figured they needed to clear 50 acres a day, required to clear 8" and under, based on a 5 day work week. It would take a minimum of 4-5 machine's running with NO breakdown's. It is not going to happen.
This is not doing the mulching business any good.

Who's to say THEY are going to travel?
Maybe they'll just sub to someone. Or do it over the internet :)
