who builds the best or the most bang for the buck???we need a 400-700lb upright gun safe with maybe a 1 hour fire protection??liberty,fort knox???seems to be a lot of them and the features are confusing???

I have been a gunsmith/dealer for the last 20 years. I currently have both a Treadlock and Fort Knox. The Fort Knox is by far the better of the two. The Fort Knox model 6031 is what I have and I paid around $900 for it a couple of years ago. I believe it meets most of your requirements. You can see it and other Fort Knox models here

Check out your local gun stores. I would personally stay away from the WalMarts/Sams type stores unless I could get a name brand safe.

I visited a safe dealer in OK and compared the Ft. Knox, Cannon, Liberty etc. Ft. Knox had the most security features that actually matter. (They were also the most costly) Cannon was probably the most affordable vs. features.
If you can spare the cash, I'd get a 72" high Ft. Knox. The added height is really nice for shotguns.

I went with a Cannon as they had the best or as good as the best fire rateing at the time I bought mine. I got a bit of a deal because the dealer had one that came with a run in the paint from the factory and they knocked off about $200. I liked the Liberty safes as well but all the others were soo much more $$$ for the same safe. I found that you really have to pay very close attention to the fire rateings. As it is I still keep the most valuable papers in a sub safe that is fireproof as well. Dave

I've seen many of these safes mentioned, and many of them are very good. I had a Colbal, and it was at least as good as some of the other names. I looked at their web site lately though and it seems they have changed some since i bought mine (better or worse I dunno).
Look for an S&G locking mechanism and exterior hinges. The exterior hinges allow the door to swing wide open. The safes are designed that even if the hinges are cut off, the door cannot be opened. The hinges are just for the door to rest on when swinging. They are not part of what holds it shut.

We have the one in the middle. We are also in a mobil home. I have all my hopes pinned on this thing to hold us on the ground in case there's a tornado. It weighs a ton! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Actually ours has a handle that looks like a 4-way tire tool.
