I would not assume that the hoses are hooked up correctly from the factory. As I said before, if it is hooked up right, the beveled part of the tine will cut the ground first. Whether it cuts with the tines chewing up the dirt from the surface to some depth, the dirt will come back toward you from the bottom , It should not throw dirt at you. If it does, you need to keep the tiller on the ground and or tilted so as to prevent that from happening.
Now, if the tiller is designed to cut with the beveled side of the tiller turning back toward you, which means that the cutting action is from some depth towards the surface. you may get some dirt thrown over the top, back toward you. Again. adjustment is required to keep dirt off you.
Does anyone know if the tiller was designed to pull backward, or push forward.
If you are thinking about switching the tines around, you need to be sure that they will bolt up correctly. if they will not reverse, then reversing the motor is not a good idea.
For those that have rocky soil, you can add a valve for reversing the motor for clearing jams.
How many of you have speed control on the PTO? Those that have to activate the PTO with a switch probably do not, you are full on of off. You can regulate the speed somewhat by changing engine rpm.
