NOAA produced a new forecast for December, January and February. Their indicators strongly point toward a winter with much milder conditions compared to many winters past.
Firstly, for snow-lovers and winter-lovers, there will be winter. It just may not be enough winter to make you happy.
NOAA says the winter forecast as based on two sound forecasting indicators- El Niño and the climate trend of warmer winters.
Their discussion about the latest forecast states that the combination of El Niño and a warming winter pattern in the Great Lakes gives them fairly strong confidence in the forecast.
Here is the latest temperature forecast for the meteorological winter months. The farther north you are in Michigan, the greater your chance of having warmer-than-normal temperatures. Michigan has two ranges of above normal temperature chances. From Oakland County to Grand Rapids and all areas northward the chance of warmer-than-normal temperatures is between 50 percent and 60 percent. This is a significant chance of anomalously warmer winter temperatures. The far southern part of Lower Michigan still has a chance of warmer-than-normal weather, but at a lesser chance between 40 percent and 50 percent.
