When we started work on the BXpanded Quick-On Snow Plow we tried to consider as many "opportunities" as possible. One that that immmediately became clear in our testing was that depending on the float function of the loader to allow for irregularities in the surface was quite problematic on small tractors. When the loader is in "float", the weight of the loader, arms, bucket, etc. is resting on the blade therefore on the ground. This removes the weight from the front wheels of the tractor and drastically reduces the steering ability as well as traction available for pushing. It also applies much weight on the blade making scraping of unpaved surfaces really difficult without "digging in" and the additional weight increased scarring of paved surfaces. Additionally, when pushing against any resistance with the loader in float, the front of the tractor tends to rise and further unload the tires and allows the blade to dig even farther down into the surface. To demonstrate, try this: With the bucket flat, drive up to an obstruction (tree or curb). Put the bucket on the ground. Move the loader control to the "Float" position. Slowly drive forward. The front wheels will lift from the ground with surprising ease. Take the loader out of the float position and repeat. The front will not rise.
To eliminate these problems, we determined that our best results were obtained with a unit that is able to float lightly on the surface applying just the weight of the blade and with the loader in a fixed, non-floating condition. In other word, the snow plow blade floats independently of the loader.
We also recognized that there are circumstances such as ice, or back dragging when additional weight is needed on the blade. We designed our unit to allow the use of the full downward force of the loader, or the loader "float" function if desired.
In short, with the BXpanded blade, one can float the blade with just the weight of the blade to maximize steering and traction and allow more control and minimized damage, float the blade with the loader in "float", or apply full down pressure with the loader.
To our knowledge, no other manufacturer offers this capability on a loader mount snow plow.
