Hi, Someone told me Cub Cadet is made by Murrays. Is this true?

Thanks, Terry.

Hi
I believe MTD makes the cub Cadet.

Yeah, MTD does make Cub Cadet. They bought them out from IH back in (I think?) 1982. I could be wrong on that, though. Here is the link to MTD's website:

Yes, MTD does own the Cub Cadet name. But 'who makes the tractors' is a very different answer.

The Cub compact tractors of the '90s thru about 2002 (the 7000 series) were made by Mitsubishi. In 2003 they introduced new compact tractors. The larger ones are made by Kioti and match the Kioti specs. I believe that the smaller ones (including the gas models /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif) are made by Dihatsu.... but I could be wrong on that.

Kioti does make nice compact tractors, but I wouldn't trade my cub for any other color. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, the compacts are made by other people for Cub Cadet. For some dumb odd reason I was thinking he meant the lawn and garden tractors. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

So Daihatsu does make the 5000 & 7000 series? Do they make the new 30 & 32 hp 7000 series tractors? I was wondering who made them. Is Daihatsu a Japanese company?

You could be right... maybe he was asking about the L&G tractors.
I believe the 30 & 32 hp tractors are Kioti.

The larger Cub Cadet 8000 series tractors are built by Kioti. I have not seen any information that points to the 7000 series 30 & 32 HP being built by Kioti.

I've got a 7264.(2003)
It was "built"(assembled) in the USA. I believe in Ohio.
The engine is a Diahatsu. They've been building engines, cars and trucks in Japan for years.
Alot of the "castings" on the tractor come from China. (ie: trans / differential )
Many of the tractor companies are using China castings.
The new 8000 series are ;I'm told , out of Korea . The 8000 diesels have a Cat engine.

The 8000 series don't use the Daedong engines like their orange counterparts? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Jayc, IS that a fact on the 8000 using a cat motor or did you just hear that?

I was told about the Cat engines last week by the "factory Cub rep." at my dealers open house.
He also said that all engine repair(warranty/service) on the new "Cats" would be done by a Cat dealer until all Cub dealers were trained.

Thats only true of the new 5000 series with the cat engine, not of the larger tractors. Vibe I got from the dealer meeting was that people are pretty on edge about servicing those tractors. Your dealer will not be allowed to touch the engine... kinda scarry.

The 5000 series are built by MTD.

The old 7000 series (7000, 7200, 7260, 7300, 7360) were made by Mitsubishi.

The current 7000 series (7264 7284) are made by MTD, and the 7284 is the tractor with the Cat engine.

The 7500 series (7530 and 7532) are again made by Mitsubishi.

The 8000 series (8354, 8404, 8454) are made by Kioti

Hope this helps.

Mahindra has taken over the 7000 series. I saw them two weeks ago where I bought my Cub 7275. They are identical looking except in RED.

Cub Cadet is all MTD. MTD, Modern Tool and Die Company started in Brookpark, Ohio about 45 years ago. They were an automotive stamper and T&D shop. I grew up right down the street from their original plant.

I don't follow the Cub Cadet line but Murray and all the discount store, TSC type mowers are built by MTD. That includes Troy Built. We call MTD "More Tools Desired"

I actually have a TSC (Tough S**t Charlie's) riding lawn mower built by MTD. I beat the heck out of it and it just keeps on truck'in along. My Kubota is way too big for mowing lawns. I actually put diesel in the MTD once. Didn't run too good. It did run, no power though. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Just a fair warning about that tractor, at the last dealer sales meeting I was at many people where concerned about service with that tractor. Your dealer will not be allowed to do anything to the CAT engine. If you have a problem you have to take it to a CAT dealer and pay CAT labor rates. Its a good engine no doubt, but I would be cautious.

Neil:

I have a question. What exactly do you mean by a "Cat" dealer? We work on all makes of engines in our shop and we are factory certified Caterpillar/Cummins/Detroit Diesel and Mercedes Benz. The only thing we aren't certified is Mack.

The labor rate is the same across the board, no matter what engine or drive line for that matter.

Just because you have a "kitty" under the hood doesn't mean you need a bigger wallet, at least not in either of our 2 facilities.

From what I observe, Caterpillar Engine Company stands behind their engines with very little flak concerning any warranty problems.

As for the lack of support from Cub on their machines for CAT motors, I find that real hard to swallow. I realize the guy who stated this is a dealer, but I doubt the message was interpreted correctly. Cub wouldnt introduce a new product they wouldnt stand behind, otherwise they would be out of business. If its warranty work there will be no additional surcharges because its a CAT engine...I'm sure regional shops would be designated for that type of warranty work (if under warranty) or if the dealer isnt qualified to work on the engine...

If your not a certified CAT repair center, then you can not preform any warrenty service on the engine. Only CAT certified repair centers are allowed to. Cub's stance is that they are going to stay with the CAT engine for the time being, in 2-3 years if the market is still good for them they will then start encouraging dealers to get certified. Its rather expensive and time consuming to become certified, especialy since most dealers would be doing it soly for that particular tractor.

Labor rates are going to vary from place to place. Around here all the CAT places deal mainly with the big consturction equipment and their labor rates are higher than the AG dealers. But thats here, I am in Lancaster County PA and the market here is rather unique. To put it bluntly, MTD is not standing behind the engine, CAT is. Your local market and available dealers are going to determine if this model is a good idea for you. I'm just trying to shed some light on what was a rather upsetting situation at the last meeting. You probably should ask your local dealer if they antisipate this being a problem for them. For us, it would be.
