I have had many generators. I too when considering the PTO set, thought, yes, you always have a operational tractor around. Very true! And so as absolute back-up power insurance a PTO set is number one and beats out all those 3600rpm screamers in my opinion.
In fact, when using mine, I used to turn off the main switch and open a splitter box to which I would attach booster style clips from the PTO set to the lugs!
Our power does go out regulary and eventually I evolved. Bought a 200 amp ASCO automatic transfer switch (off E-Bay) and a commercial Onan slow running genset that needed re-winding.
There is another manual transfer switch behind the automatic so I can choose two other back-ups. A small 3600 Rpm Diesel Yanmar and a 5000 watt inverter (For Night Time Use).
I take power outages seriously, and they are still a pain in the behind, but all this makes it easier and I see this money and time spent better then having spent it on some other frivolous luxury!.
