I bought my BX from you guys and have to say I love it. The Kubota product is simply awesome. I'm curious though. In the grand scheme, the new cases that Messicks is selling, how are they in comparison to the Kubota? They sure look nice.

I love my Kubota, but one of the reasons I do is because it is not advanced, at least in my mind...

JD or NH seem to make more advanced tractors...

Sounds like shoppintractors is on target here.

What was the motivation for this thread? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Neil, I believe I participated in this poll on your tractor review website, and I've also participated in a couple other of your polls.

The problem I have with all polls like this is that the questions are really not specific enough, and there is no indicator of the total number of votes, or if that number is even remotely close to a representative sample (let alone a statistical sample).

I tend to think that the polls simply end up being popularity contests, which is fine. Because I don't watch the Miss America contest JUST to see the swim suits (OK that is a lie). But the poll is so inconclusive and so non-specific that I think you might want to reword it and ask it again on your site? And then when you post the results in your poll history thread, give the total number of votes, and let us know if those are discrete votes or if the same computer voted several times.

As for this poll specifically, I could not disagree more. I think the Kubota machines are basic meat & potatoes type of machines. They work, they work darn well, they work every time you turn the key. But they are not fancy in their designs, nor are they innovative in their designs. I think they are one of the best all around tractor designs in the world because they function so well. But the NH units are more advanced in their ergonomic designs and their loaders. The new JD units probably have the most advanced engines. Even Kioti, with their CK class machines, has more advanced designs (no snag tail lamps!).

So while all this is subjective and not scientific it could make for a fun conversation. Let the debate begin?!?

The total number of votes are posted below the percentages, 82 in that case I think. I just posted it because I thoguth it was interesting. I agree that Kubota is not the most advanced, and your exactly right that its more of a popularity contest than anything else. I have a hard time comming up with those questions and the sad thing is the better the question seems to be the less people get involved and vote. Just messing around on a slow day /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I'm a relative Kubota newbie, but didn't Kubota invent both the CUT and the HST? Maybe they're not as cutting edge today though. I like mine because they're well built and easy to service; the latest bells and whistles are definitely secondary for me.

I think Ferguson invented the modern CUT in the late 1940's with his TO series tractors which evolved into the Ford 9N, 2N and 8N tractors. Copied wildly by all sorts of manufacturers and many are still running today. It was even dubbed a utility tractor back then. The term "compact" as added to the utility tractor moniker is fairly recent in comparison, but still probably dating back a couple decades. Small tractors designed for multiple use have been around for quite some time. Farmall Cub LowBoys were very popular on the mini-farm and small acreage homeowner lots, they were more modern and compact than the Fords, but still an evolutionary step toward what we have now in the CUT market.

Don't have a clue who invented the HST system.

Just my thoughts.

Back in the 70s, I worked in the Ag industry. At that time, some self propelled windrowers (swathers) were coming out with hydrostatic transmissions. They were variable speed pump/motor combinations where one pump/motor ran each drive wheel. The ones I saw were mfged by Vickers and Sunstrand. The two pumps were in one housing, so you just coupled that to an engine, plumbed in the hydraulics (tanks, filter, hoses, control levers, etc).

The systems were pretty simple outside the pump.

The ones I worked around were very reliable. As long as the oil stayed clean and you didn't run it out of oil, it really lasted a LONG time. Run it out of oil or get some debris in it, it would trash out pretty quickly. Our systems were running about 3000 psi.

My understanding might be incorrect, but I think about that same time, HSTs were going into skid steer loaders and a few utility loaders/tractors.

The rest is history. Combines, tractors, skid steers, etc..

Ron

With what I can see of the Bota drive, it looks very similar to that old design. I'm sure it has new bells/whistles, but the parts manual shows an exploded view that is basically the same prinicipal.

Kubota is the company that really brought this stuff to the mass market in the US. I am not sure who to credit with the exact principles.
