I agree. I wanted one in the worst way when I got my hoe. But never got around to having one made. On an excavator, different story. There is so little reach and only 180 degrees iof movement with a little hoe, so it's hardly worth the bother. I also have grapples, so the thumb is even more unnecessary. -+

They do come in handy for stuff like this20190411_143300.jpeg20190411_144550.jpeg

Except from depriving one of badly needed excercise. Not meaning to be argumentative. I like my toys, but . . .

It is handy to raise a log for bucking, but a loader/forks/grapple will do that too.

AND, you would be hard pressed to carry that log out of the forest.

I pick up a lot of things with the hoe and thumb, latest was a 5x7ft sheet of 7ga and put it on a set of saw horses to cut to size then put the 5x6ft sheet on the trailer floor. Well worth the 300 or so beans it cost me.

I will likely end up with one.
Looks handy.

Who needs a thumb?
I'd say that the answer to that is, "Anyone who has ever used one."

My thumb does need modification, BX thumbs are manual and I'd like a hydraulic one,,, future project.

Agreed. I’ve had 5 previous backhoes without thumbs. My Kubota BH92 has a mechanical thumb. I’ll never go back

When I am building rock walls a thumb is an absolute necessity. I can set rocks exactly where I need them and often use the thumb to bump them in place.

I have a 5 ton excavator, classed as a Mini I think. You don't need a thumb to dig clean dirt. You don't need a thumb to pull excavator when stuck in mud. You don't need a thumb to pull such as stone or tree to you. However to load or stack or place anything "I" need a thumb. With thumb you can handle such that is way too large to fit in a bucket.

You need one to pick up beer cans.

Indispensable for demolition.
