Only hit one; on the Interstate at the edge of Ogden, UT. A big doe jumped right in front of me just at the near end of a bridge. I think I hit her and brakes almost simultaneously (doing just about 55 mph in a 4 x 4 Dodge pickup). Only had to replace everything in front of the fan the following week, but was able to continue the trip by just pinching closed one tube on the radiator with pliers to stop the leak. And the oddest thing to me about that Dodge was that there was NO painting to be done; no painted parts damaged at all.

I had one run into the side of my van a few years ago while driving out of our private drive. Scared the heck out of me! I was going about 15 MPH and he ran into the drivers front fender and door. Did $1600.00 in damage and had the nerve to get up and run away! I had been deer hunting all day and that was the best buck I saw! My wife clipped a big doe with the Jeep GC and did about $4500 in damage. The doe was about 175lbs. and was like jello inside after the impact. I had two in the freezer already so we let the cop have it. Besides this is the way I like to get my deer! (see attached photo)

I was traveling around 30mph down a dirt road, and had one jump in fromt of me. I hit the brakes, and didn't even nick the deer. However, when the deer turned to run off, one of its hind legs kicked the front end of my car and broke a piece of plastic. That's the closest I've been to hitting one.

I have had (as have other members of my family) a lot of luck running our vehicles with deer alerts on the vehicles. Those of us that use them have never hit a deer (out of 9 people). I live in Michigan, and Michigan has the highest population of deer in the country (about 2.8 million deer in the state I think).

I was in the vehicle with my mother when she hit one...new vehicle and she had not purchased any deer alerts yet.

On another note, average cost of car repair from a car-deer collision would have to be close to $4,000. What are the chances insurance companies could put up a bounty for every deer harvested during deer season (legally)? Maybe $100-200? Or it could be more along the lines of a discount on your current insurance for every deer you harvest. I took 4 deer last season, so I saved insurance companies $16,000. The meat is just about gone too, so it may be 3 or 4 I'll take this season.

This reminds me of a "King of the Hill" episode. Hank takes son Bobby to deer hunting ranch for a canned hunt because he can't get a license from the state for some reason. Right of passage for most Texans. They are in their stand, with the feeder below, when several docile creatures come to eat and stare at them with their big brown eyes. Can't shoot. On the way home, Hank lets Bobby drive the truck so he can still have some type of manly right of passage. Bobby gets going along and bags a deer with a truck. Brought it home in the bed of the truck. Bobby makes mom Peggy proud, and the rest of the neighborhood too. Bobby is a man now./w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Nice job on that one Von. It looks about the same size as the one I bagged last night. I have always insisted on anyone that hunts in my back field using a bow due to the proximity of some other property, but it is time the herd was thinned around here and I don't own one. The shotgun will come out this fall and I might have some other help as well.

Bayrat, same story, slightly differant numbers, 365 miles, 100ft from drive, 20-25mph, buck caved in top of left front fender (chin), quarter section just behind fender well (front shoulder), driverside front door, (rear-end swung around nailing it) most irritating factor is I just put that fender on the weekend before....and doubled the damage that I replaced.
Insult to injury, it got up and run off.

Read in the Wall Street Journal the other day that the main predator of deer in the U.S. is the Chevy pickup. People have moved into the woods and chased out all the natural predators, allowing the deer population to get out of hand, now more are killed by vehicles than any other way.

Drove to the Finger Lakes outlet mall in Junieus yesterday and was watching the sides of the road more than the lanes on the way home. Kind of like I do at intersections ever since that young girl ran the stop sign on my way home and I broad sided her with a one ton van. I drove the van home after installing the spare headlight I always carried, she had the totaled Buick her boyfriend's mother loaned her flatbedded to the junk yard. Makes a nervous wreck out of you when these things happen and there is no way to avoid them.
