Who or what will control the Internet????

I was just reading this news article that talks about the future of who will control the World Wide Web, commonly known as the Internet. The original agreement was to expire in 2006, however the Bush Administration has chosen to hold control for a longer period. Please read the article and comment.

Sort of over my head.

Immediate thoughts, throw those that write spam, viruses, worms, spyware, popups etc. in jail for a very long time........with no computer access of course.

Second, long as it stays Gobal access.

Third, I buy some thru the internet, gives me an edge for pricing professionally and personally.

Forth, there are wonderful sites full of info on things that matter............TBN for one.

If I read it correctly, they're talking about handing administration over to the UN. The UN is a joke, and an expensive one at that. No wonder people are objecting.

The article you are talking about is discussing the Domain Name System and the fact that the US does not want to relinquish control. DNS is the mechanism that lets you type www.tractorbynet.com (humanly readible name) instead of having to remember the IP address, the equivalent of an internet phone number. There are quite a few shakedowns that are going to have to take place in many of the systems of the internet... and who is going to control them. I'm a big believer that the Internet Service Providers (ISP's) should NOT be policing the internet like they do. Individual entities should be responsible for their own security, and the ISP's should neither be the police force to stop wrong doing, nor should they be held responsible if a customer does something wrong using their network. These are the same protections that phone companies are granted but still are not the norm for ISP's.

ISP's can turn off your service if they think you have done something wrong. They don't have to prove your wrongdoing to anyone or any authority and you have no guaranteed service commitment from them. Likewise.. in todays society, they couldn't do differently even if they wanted to (they don't.. they like having that control.. but I'm talking theoretically). The reason they can't is because they can be held responsible for what their users do if they cause havoc on the internet.

The internet is still very much a wild, wild west because of this. ISP's regularly play games with each other over spammers. If one major ISP (like AT&T for example) provides service to a known spammer, then in an effort to "get the attention" of AT&T, PSI-Net may refuse to route any traffic that originates from any of AT&T's customers bound for any of PSI-Nets customers. ISP's should NOT be allowed to play these games and should not be a police force. They should route packets regardless of how they feel about them.

Dukakis....... isn't he the guy that thought up the Universal Health Insurance Plan for the State of Massachusetts and got the legislature to pass a law taxing employers to pay for it? Then after the State started getting the money, he left office and the plan was never implemented, but the State continues to collect the employer paid tax till this very day!!!! And that is why they call this state Taxxachusetts! They have a HUGE surplus (millions) on state funds and still cry poor!
