Who owns an oil lamp?

I just got one recently to use as emergency backup for lighting and to use when camping if desired. It will be a part of my emergency lighting plan for the future. I was just wondering who else has oil lamps and if they use them as backup lighting or camping or decoration? I wrote a bit about it in my blog, but I figure this is the place to get the best info, so have at it.

I probably have 10 of these things...different sizes and shapes. 90% for looks, and 10% emergency!

I have 5 or 6 of the old railroad lanterns. We use them occasionally during summer evenings when we are out on the deck. I guess we could use them during a power outage, but haven't had to yet - knock on wood.

We have frequent power outages up here in the foothills where we live. We have five or six oil lamps that we use for back-up lighting, plus they also put out a little heat. The Alladin lamp we purchased from Eddie Bauer many years ago, as mentioned in an earlier post, is an excellent source of light--I would say equivalent to a sixty watt bulb. Also used some for camping--nice heat in the outhouse on chilly mornings....Regards, Mike

We've probably have 15 to 20 in the house. The wife collects them. The older expensive ones are for decoration, while the cheap newer ones are for emergency lighting.

I don't have any now, but when I was a kid, we always had a few kerosene lanterns. We didn't have electricity in the barn so they were used when we went to do the milking in the dark, and they were used sometimes to go to the outhouse in the dark. And I'm sure glad those days are over.:laughing:

We've got a couple of the antique variety that we keep for emergencies, along with some of that Walmart smellum good citified kerosene. I also keep a couple hand crank flashlights on hand, and am planning on getting a hand crank radio.

5 or 6 here as well, use them as well as a couple of colman gas lanterns during our outages.
