I don't like the scented oils and I find kerosene smelly as well. I noticed on the Dietz webpage that they sold an oil - W.T. Kirkman Oil and Electric Lanterns: 32 oz. Medallion Lamp Oil/Kerosene Substitute that does not smell. There price is good but the shipping is expensive.
Keep the wicks trimmed. Growing up my Mom cleaned the glass chimneys using newspapers - I tried it and it works great.
Enjoy but be safe.
I've found the low sulfur kerosene to have less smell as well.
