Who runs a CV joint on their PTO shaft

Next question, do I need one on both ends of that shaft? Seems like a lot of the prebuilt shafts have an 80 degree joint on one end and 50 degree on the other.

No, my bale shaft is CV on tractor end and regular one on gear box end.

They are NOT cheap by a long shot and I'd dread replacing one, which is why I keep mine greased. and never drive at an angle greater than about 75 degrees under load. I 'manage, my end row turns carefully.

I am not familiar with the configuration of joints on your mower. If there are two joints on the same shaft, are they phased correctly?

CV joints can handle more angle without having a phase issue. Regular u-joints need 2 joints with equal opposite angles to be in phase.

I've had two vehicles with CV/double Cardan joints on their driveshafts. They are NOT cheap. They do not like mud, ash, road salt, etc. If you do install one - keep it WELL lubricated, as 5030 has reemphasized. Limit your turn angles.

Believe me - you WILL know when a CV joint is getting ready to blow.
