Who said corn should be knee high on the 4th of July?

It was the same guy that said that the time to plant corn is when the leaves on an oak tree are as big as a squirrel's ear.

The corn height reached by some posters is proof that manure is useful when describing home-grown crops. It seems to be that a lot of BS has been spread. <snicker>

Our corn should be knee high by the 4th., but it is 6-8" at this point. With over 12" or rain in the last 40 days, everything is stunted this year.

It'll be close by the looks of it. I didn't even plant any for myself. It's always a race for us around here anyway, Maine is a bad climate to get good corn.

My wedding anniversary is June 18th. A couple of years ago, my wife and I went up to a casino in Oklahoma to see a show and celebrate our anniversary. We also wanted to stop in and visit with my cousin in Paoli, OK. On the way to my cousin's house, it was raining buckets and I made a wrong turn. We ended up on a two-lane paved road with huge corn fields on both sides. That corn was over 7' tall and the silks were already turning. My bet would be that it could have been harvested before the 4th of July if it were sweet corn. Perhaps not, since it was surely field corn and not for roasting ears. They probably let it dry. Does anyone know how long it takes from the time the kernels are fully formed until they are dry enough for a corn picker?

That kind of depends on the area and the variety of corn.

We plant 100-115 day corn, in OK I would guess they plant ~130 day but IDK.

Right now here the corn hasn't tasseled but will be in about a week, and the kernels will be fully formed by ~early August.

Chopping for silage begins in the last week of August and Picking dry corn can run from Oct 1 thru Thanksgiving. The moisture will vary in that time span. Last year some corn was still 20%+ at Thanksgiving.

We typically shell from the 2nd week in Oct and try to be all done by Nov 1.
