If it were a Canada Goose, wouldn't you expect to have seen the parents hanging around and annoying everything in the general area of the nest?

As a general rule, YES! It seems that once they recognize an egg is not going to hatch (no, I have no idea how they come by that knowledge) they just leave. Also possible predators got them or ran them off. They have gone from being interesting critters (20 years ago) to major nuisances IMO. They will make a mess around a pond in a hurry.

Yeah, maybe it's a Kanuck goose. But I don't have a pond & I don't ever see geese on my property. The egg in the picture was probably no more than 75' from the house. Don't geese make nests? Do they only lay one egg? As I said earlier, I did find the remains of another large egg several hundred feet away out in the pasture.
Goose is a good guess, though - - it would have to be a big bird of some sort [or reptile!].

The 'Carolina' geese we have down here have never been to Canada at all. They were hatched, raised and released here. They return to whereever they were hatched. Since the weather here never gets cold enough to send them south, they just stay. It has been one of those programs that may have been a little too successful. A LOT of people consider them a nuisance. They don't bother me, but my parents live on Lake Wylie and those geese can cover a yard in poo in no time. They live and nest on my pond. There is a hunting season for them but I've never hunted them. The first few days of the season they are quite tame...you could kill them with a stick. So I don't see much sport in it. Plus, the only time I've tried to eat one, it was pretty bad.

I'd guess the egg in the picture is from a turkey. Probably a young hen that either got scared away or started laying the rest of her eggs somewhere else.

They try to establish domain on our pond and the neighbor's nearly every year. From what I've seen----no, they do not build a nest; yes, they lay just one egg.

George--because they are in such incredible supply, we have tried them cooked just about every way imaginable. Most ways they vary from "I'd eat it at gunpoint and then only if I was starving" to "Man, this is pretty tough/strong/oily/[put your own gastronomically-negative adjective here]". However......some years ago while I was preparing my smoker to do some venison shoulders my best friend popped in, very early in the day, with several very fresh goose breasts. They (as in scores, if not hundreds) had been destroying the ground around his bass pond with their poo and he had declared war earlier that year. He knew I was going to smoke venison that day, and suggested we try the goose. So I smoked them over charcoal, probably 4-6 hours (maybe 6-8, it's been 10-12 years or more), and over a bath of apple juice, occasionally basting them with the same. When they were done we shared them with several friends and all agreed it was quite palatable. Never replaced prime rib or bacon on my menu, but it got a very passing grade. Have only done a few since, primarily because it's a pain to dress them out and most of those that die around here do so suddenly and sometimes out of season. Best not to cook those...I'm sure you understand.

Its definitely not a goose egg as a Canuk goose will always lay close to water and also will cover the egg to prevent crows and other things from seeing it. I'm at a loss, maybe a Turkey?

That looks large for a turkey egg, and way too large for a guinea. I'd still bet on it being a goose.

How can you tell if the Canada Goose egg is Canadian

If you hold you ear up to it you will hear things like... " get me outta here eh!"

OR you'll hear:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

These are just some of the things thatwill tell you if it's a Canadian Egg:D

My vote is for turkey. Turkey will lay one egg at a time, each day. If something disturbs them from that site, they'll move on to another.

Here in Southeast Texas we have Whistling Ducks that roost/nest in trees. Could it be from one of these, possibly pushed out of the nest somehow?
