We have very bad water here very dirty lots of sediment etc The only way I could deal with it was to use a settlement tank. the tank I use is 7000 gallon I fill it, then pump from it into the house, however I have toilets on a direct line from the supply.

I had a similar problem: tons of little flint peices.

Best solution IMHO is a back flush filter. My filter is similar to
http://www.h2odistributors.com/html/wh1354.htm but not exactly the same.

The idea is that its on a timmer. Every few days in the middle of the night it back flushes what it collected the last few days down the drain. Works like a champ, and the media last almost forever.
Mine catches all but the supper fine partciles. I follow up with two fine cartridge filters (~5 micron) in series after this flushable filter. The result is very clean water and cartridge filters that last at least one month maybe two.

I also added a chlorinator to my system which drops pellets into my well. This works great. This way I am sure that I have bacteria free water.
Some day I will add a underground tank. The chlorinator would work even better if it was dropping into a tank rather than my very deep well. Also the sediment would be reduced.

For large quantities of sediment in your water you might want to look at one of these as the first stage in the filtration process. Rusco Filters

I ordered a Honeywell Brackman filter on Friday at the plumbing supply house that filters 100 microns and has a manual backwash feature. I can add a automatic backwash feature to it at a later date if I wish. I could also order a finer screen down to a 20 micron if I find the need at a later date, but I will be holding off. They told me that they will give me a call after the armored car arrives with it. It cost $220 for the filter. The optional screens are $55 more. I won't mention how much the automatic back wash motor is, because I don't want anyone here recommending a psychiatrist for me if I ever admit purchasing it. I will let you know how it works after I get it installed. For my application, this seems like the easiest and fastest solution and the least amount of space with ease of installation.... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and help.

Looking to get some system for my Mom's house. LOTS of crud in the water. Very silty. Now I have seen the filters, and they seem pretty easy to rig up, but here a Q for you. I can't seem to find anyone that will say where they go in the line. Do they go before the storage tank, or after it? Seems the best place would be inbetween the well, and the tank in the house, but don;t know for sure.

After the pressure tank is my understanding. I put a shutoff valve on both sides so all I need to do is shut them off to swap out my filter. Installed it myself also, wasn't hard at all. Best part? no drips! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Honeywell unit that I have purchased goes on the main line before the tank and after the check valve coming from the well. I am going to install a ball valve on either side of the filter in the event that I need to remove the bowl for any type of service in the future. This will keep any of the fines out of the storage tank and the fines that are actually particles of sand that have sharp edges that can abrade the rubber bladder in the storage tank and cause it to fail will not be able to get into the storage tank. I have been told that this is one of the leading causes of the storage tank premature failures. This filter can be purchased on line at WWW.Controldepot.com for $217.29 and the automatic backwash control is $147.67. The model # is HBRF76S1023 1". This is for a 1" water line. If yours is larger or smaller, they have kits to accommodate the other sizes. This seems to me to be the best system available for the money and it takes the least amount of space. The thing that I liked best about this over all the rest of the systems, is that there is no moving parts and that you don't have to buy anything additional and it will last a lifetime and never wear out. With routine backwashing, the filter should never get clogged and will always be serviceable. All the others require maintenance replacement products and are much larger and expensive and don't do any more.

I think you have the wrong link for Controls Depot.

I believe the correct link is: Controls Depot
