put pressure gauges on each side of the filter. when the pressure loss across the filter gets to large replace the filter.

i dont see why you wouldn't keep the 10mic filter. If it keeps the grit out of the faucets why wouldn't you do it.

I have a sediment tank before the filter that catches any sand particles with a specific gravity greater than water. It sure extends filter life.

While speaking of sand particles, did you realize one little particle of sand of the correct size can cause your water system to flood your house.

That one little sand particle stuck in the correct location of your laundry unit mixer valve can block the valve open causing the washing machine to over fill. All the yelling to stop, WOOHA, pushing the stop switch, un-plugging the unit from the electric outlet won't stop the flow. The manual water valves must be closed to stop the water.

The rule at our house "never leave with that appliance running" sure saved the basement from flooding. This was before the sediment tank and filter was installed and this near miss prompted that installation.

Did he say 'why' he thought the 20's were better then the 10's ?

I've got 3 of those whole house filters side by side. Start with a 20 mic pleated, then a 10 mic charcoal and last a 5 mic pressed fiber.
Usually replace all 3 at the 1.5-2 month interval.

He did not say why the 20's were better..

I just bought a triple 'big blue' (10"x4.5") filter system.. I am going to go with a 20/10/5 micron filters.. I also had them add 2 pressure gauges

The 20 and 5's are pleated and washable.. the 10 is a spun polypropylene ( they did not have a 10 in a washable/pleated..

Thoughts on what the water pressure difference should be to change the filters?

I have had a few buddies around me with them and they seem to plug up really quick around here. I personally have a aztech iron filter with a chlorinator system and also a 90k grain water softner and also RO system for drinking water. I will say that it sure makes a difference compared to some of my buddies systems. If i was to do it all over again i would put a whole home RO system in. I think it would be worth while in the end.

Not sure if mine is any comparison...
But I have a $20 cartridge filter system from lowes....

Replace the cartridge every 6 months..

my neighbor has a flushback system..
no filter changes..
She just has a hose on the bottom of it and opens a faucet and it flushes the dirt out that hose...
She does it every month for about 20 min....
