Who's got the best grease setup? What do you use?

Since greasing the tractor is one of the most important things a tractor owner can do, Just wondering what others are doing for greasing? I just have a "one hand" run of the mill grease gun, I hate it, I hate doing it, I hate the mess. I'm thinking of getting an electric one and mounting it somewhere on the tractor or backhoe to make it easier to grease and remember to grease. What do you use? and how do you like it? And are you fatefully greasing every ten hours of use?

I use a pistol grip style grease gun and yes I grease daily. I am a fulltime driver. I have not got an electric grease gun , but in a commercial situation it would "walk" quickly.
Tip : if you have trouble seeing a grease nipple try to spray paint in white or yellow (shows well in poor light), espesially if it is a pto shaft, and painted black as the fashion/style seems to be these days.

Can't beat the ease but you do have to have an air supply. In the field I have a 20 gal. compressed air holding tank that is used to power the gun. The air easily lasts until the opportunity to refill it.

10 hours greasing? Absolutely. With the backhoe it is usually more often. The quality of the grease is important, too. My favorite is TRC 800 but Lucas and AMSOIL also have quality grease.

For disc bearings and other implement bearings exposed to dirt and dust a cheaper brand grease is used and more is pumped in to displace the gunk.

Note: Electric guns are heavy and inevitably the battery will go dead when you need it the most. And batteries are very expensive when it finally dies completely. Compare prices.

We buy Lucas by the case lot but use a mechanical grease gun and try to grease every ten hours

My cousins who restore British Sports cars swear by these, only type they will use and have been using them for years

I grease mine every ten hours or sometimes sooner. Biggest issue is when the implements or FEL get a little wear and become hard to grease. Even the pneumatics can be messy and the one I have will not give enough pressure in some instances. So I prefer to use a full size pistol grip gun with flex hose, but it took me a while to find one that had enough pressure. I hate to say it here, but the one I found is a John Deere model TY26689. It is assembled(?) in the U.S., has a selector lever for either volume or pressure, is rated at 7500psi, and at $36 list price is hard to beat. I have yet to find a plugged zerk that it would not put grease into.

I have arthritis in my hands and was having trouble with the pistol grip and lever pump grease guns. This Milwaukee M12 grease gun puts out 5000 psi, has a 36" whip with a holder to keep it clean and an extended run 12 volt Li-ion battery. If you need more power they now have out an M18 that put out 8000 psi.

This is a good grease gun and really works well for me, I have no experience with the other battery operated grease guns and I am sure they are all fine guns and work well for others. The thing I like about the Milwaukee that the batteries can be used on other Milwaukee tools, drills, saws and etc.

I use an air powered gun I got at Home Depot with "red" grease. One other thing I do is change out the zerks when they become a bit plugged. You can get them thru Amazon for a lot cheaper than at the dealer. If memory serves the 8mm is the most popular but occasionally I have found a SAE gets into the mix.

The Lincoln 1162 has a feature where it will continuously pump grease if you hold down the trigger. But I know what you mean when the grease pump loses its prime.

I'm cheap so run the gun dry each tube rather than checking the grease level by pulling out the tube spring handle. When refilling I'll take a Popsicle stick and dig a little grease out of the rear of the tube and place it in the gun's head where the grease has been sucked into the pump to make a depression. You could also just place a pile of grease on the top of the tube. When the grease tube is screwed back into the head it forces some of the grease into the pump.

Then the gun is put back together, the spring lever pushed in, and the trigger is held down until the grease flows. Sometimes it takes a few seconds; other times it might take 30 seconds. It is sure much easier than using a hand pump gun.

Not the same model but I like the idea of the grease counter on this one, don't really need a four ft hose though.

+1 I picked up the Milwaukee M12 and it makes the job so much easier. :thumbsup:

I use the same air operated Lincoln as mentioned above, for everything, except "easy lube" trailer hubs where I use another Lincoln, pistol grip hand operated version. Do the tractor every 10 hrs although have been known to forget and go over.

It would be nice to have one mounted somewhere on the tractor or backhoe to make it easier not to forget. Anybody mount one? I saw at the Kubota dealer they had spring clip grease gun mounts.
