Why By a Motorhome or RV?

Personally, I dislike RVs and large parts of the popular culture RV "lifestyle" .

I've never understood the appeal of the "RV lifestyle" but I guess I can understand the innate desire that people have to form social groups around anything they might have in common. To me and many others our RV is a means, but to the "lifestyle" types the RV is itself an end.

Sure its an expensive toy but just like tractors for some and boats for others, it's worth it.
For us it is an easy way to travel with our pets without having o worry about sneaking them in or staying in a room where other pets have been and where our pets will spend the night sniffing around and won't settle own, been there done that.

We drive back north to Florida every winter and we, like others, like to know that he beds are clean and we ont hav to worry about sitting on toilets.(wife also neat freak)

If we decide to go visit the kids for a week, it's just easier to load and go.

We all tow a Honda CRV to ride around once we get to our destination.

If I was going to do it, I'd tow a small trailer. I think it would be nice to be able to disconnect the tow vehicle for day trips rather than packing up the campsite. I already have a suburban for a 2nd vehicle to tow my tractor out to our rural property, so it would only be the expense of the trailer. Maybe in a few years. ;)

got that one covered...no Trailer needed:

Get a Unimog and convert it into a camper! (look them up, very fun).

I love mogs too.

But the best thing about the Mitsu canter 4x4 is parts are much more available and I imagine cheaper.

We bought a new class C motorhome last year and spent about 6 months full timing in the RV. I agree it is not for everyone. After pulling a travel trailer for many years it was time to move on up. The key is finding rv parks in the areas you want to stay that are not over crowded or over priced. We spent 3 months at the Twin Elm RV park in Bandera, TX while we worked on our land. We got to meet other full timers who turned out to be great people. Alot of times the park would fill up for the weekend but weekdays the park would empty out with only the full timers left.

Most do it for the lifestyle not the cost savings.

My camping adventure started back in the early 90's. I was taking a yearly trip out west and after a few years I had seen most of the well known tourist places. I was exploring more and more remote areas which required longer drives at the end of the day to limited lodging. I went through two canvas pop-ups and then two hard side pop-ups (Chalet A-frame). I camped in places with a million dollar view. Some of those places you couldn't get a modern low slung car there. Now with a 22' travel trailer I enjoy the luxury of always having a bathroom behind me when I need to take a break. I still get of the beaten path but am a little more selective on what roads I drag the bigger camper down.

There's always been discussions about motorhome vs. trailer. Each has advantages and disadvantages. If you're going to stay in one place for extended periods of time, a trailer is probably better than a motorhome, and we learned quickly that we wanted a small vehicle to tow behind a motorhome. Even when we had the 18' Winnebago Brave in 1973, we towed an Opel Cadet. But when we had trailers, and wanted to make side trips (or day trips) where we couldn't take the trailer, I sure wasn't going to disconnect and leave the trailer in someone's parking lot, so we either paid for an RV site or skipped the trips. On the other hand, I didn't worry so much about leaving the motorhome way out on the back side of a supermarket or shopping center parking lot, and disconnecting the towed car for a short side trip.

And then there's the "individual" reasons for one or the other. I'm an early riser, while my wife likes to sleep late. So when we had trailers and were on the road, sometimes by the time I got her up and in the truck to go, we were quarreling. But with the motorhome, it wasn't unusual for me to have been driving an hour before she got out of bed.

You could do the same thing with a trailer and be an hour away from her! :)

I've been half-heartedly trying to convince SWMBO that a small 5th wheel would be useful. Something fairly stripped down inside.

We are on "permanent" vacation, retired and loving it. We've got children/grandchildren in TN, NY, and VA and houses in VA and MS (where we are retiring to). We are not much into driving to see something, I've got the 50 states under my belt and she just about does, but more to see someone. It would be very nice to be able to just drive up and see someone bringing our own living quarters.

But there are other major factors. Our 4 land parcels are scattered over NE MS and it would be nice to have a "mobile camp" I could drive over so I had a place to work and rest there and act as a deer camp. A 5th wheel would provide a place to stay if a house got damaged due to storm (providing of course the 5th wheel was OK) or anything. And then there is the Natchez Trace, no commercial vehicles allowed. My BIL won't drive it w/ a load of lumber for fear of being pulled over. I could fit a lot of "stuff" in a stripped down 5th wheel.

Or a "Toy Hauler" 5th wheel...
