Why Deer Hunters Use Guns

This post has brought up HORRIBLE memories of the relatives of the devil."DEER" Two years ago around 10:00 pm in late November peak of the whitetail rut here in Pa my phone rang. My hysterical wife on the line saying she hit a BIG buck and its still alive and I have to do something. Me in shorts, slippers and a tee shirt agree to go help. Now I'm 6'3 and a solid 240lbs. young and am about to learn how stupid I really am. I get to the scene on the road we live on and my unconsolable wife is pointing up on the bank at where you can audibly hear the devil that she hit. Now remember I'm not smart enough to put shoes, long pants or a coat on. I have a perfectly good rifle in the truck, but its late and I don't want to disturb the neighbors. So I go with the flashlight and 9" fixed blade knife up the snow covered bank. The deer is now visible at about 50 feet and is in the high 150's rack wise and a stong 170lb plus. It tries to stand but has left front leg boken and right rear leg broken. After seeing the state this thing was in my confidence was boosted big time. My not very smart plan went as follow: Spook deer 5 feet toward downed tree, no problem worked good. Next find 3"+ x 4 or so feet long tree branch, got it. Now as I calculated this in my head I will place large branch in antlers as I jump on this poor wounded deers back my body mass will contain deer, arm will hold antler other arm will slit throat. Beacause I don't want to disturb neighbors with gunfire at 10:00 pm. WOW did that not go well. The first round lasted until branch pinned my arm between tree and his antler, now we're 20 yards from where we started. Round two, I'm bleeding was pretty sure from the legs, 100 more yards in under 5 seconds. I'm feeling the way he looks. About 12 more minutes of of this nonsense and my knife is gone. I hung flashlight in tree hobbled back to truck listened to my wifes babble as I angrily loaded my .308, followed my own blood trail 150 yards and resolved the matter. I lost 1 knife, 1 slipper, tore my tee shirt off, needed 12 stiches on my left knee and had to total wifes car. I don't answer the phone anymore after 9:00 pm.

More evidence why we call these wild animals. I know a guy who farms deer and he cuts the bucks antlers off prior to the rut to keep disturbances down and still doesn't want much to do with any deer that happen to be in a fowl mood.

The sad part of that whole episode is I KNOW BETTER. I have hunted big game all over the USA and Canada from wild hogs in Florida to elk in Canada and everything in between. For some reason I was brain dead that particular night.

Oh man, another devil deer story just came to mind. Did any one hear that 911 recording where this guy picks up what he thought was a dead deer, puts it in the back of his station wagon, as he's driving down the road the thing wakes up and starts biting him and kicking the windows out. He stops at a pay phone and calls the police when he claims a stray dog is now attacking him also, he sounded drunk, ignorant and belligerent but it was hilarious, you could hear the dog in the back ground and the dispatcher busting up!

I'm afraid many of the stories are not true, while others are exaggerated. When I was a kid growing up in southern Oklahoma, the only deer around were in Lake Murray State Park at Ardmore, OK. So I heard a story over 50 years ago about a fellow who thought he could hit a deer in the park with his car, load it up, take it home, and have his venison. Well, he deliberately hit a deer, loaded it in his car, and it regained consciousness as he was driving down the road, and destroyed the interior of his car before it got away. Of course he had severely damaged the front exterior of the car when he hit the deer.

I have no idea whether any such event actually occurred anywhere in the country or not, but I've been hearing various versions of that same story for over 50 years.:D Of course, I figure there's a fair chance that there is some element of truth to some of the stories, while others are pure fiction.:D

When I was first married I worked as a carpenter down in North Carolina. One of the guys on the crew had an old pick-up that had both fenders bashed in. He claimed the did it hunting deer. Some idiot must have planted the trees too close together. I don't know if it was true or not. He could have been trying to cover up something stupid.:D But then some of the guys I used to work with liked to fish with dynamite.

I seriously considered "roping a deer" myself, I live in a suburban area but have deer in the yard often, r!!!

John,

A guy at the office send me the story, I was laughing so hard I started crying , my eyes wet, my stomach twisted in a knot because the "exact same thought" went through my mind hunting last fall with one exception, I was "not" planning to tie the loose end of the rope to my body. Yikes.. No sire... I've done a few dumb thing that I am not proud of .. but not that.:D :D

I remember several years ago (20?) watching a golf tournament where a doe got boxed in by the gallery and ran into the crowd. I believe several people got trampled, kicked and at least one person ended up with a broken arm.

I didn't see that, Jim, but I've played golf a few times at Pipestem State Park and Resort in West Virginia and there were always deer on the course. And once when my brother was with me, there was a deer at the left edge of a very wide fairway, my brother hit his drive down the right side of that fairway, and as soon as he hit the ball, that deer took off running across the fairway just in time to get hit in the side by the ball. Now I know it couldn't have been, but it sure looked like that deer deliberately ran to intercept that ball.:D
