I didn't replace the starter. I beleive the posting said I serviced it.
What I did do was take it completley apart and cleaned it out. It was packed with debris. I meam PAAAACCCKKKEEED.
Resurfaced the commutator. Greased the starter gear shaft with lithium grease and soaked the armature bushings in syn oil while all this was going on.
Took apart the solenoid plunger and cleaned it. Checked its contacts and found high resistance sooo.
I installed a ford solenoid on the frame and also replaced the starter relay. (See attached picture)
It now starts better than when it was new because the ford solenod is bigger and passing more current.
After I put the starter back together I tested it with jumper cables and didnit realize the the starter gear engages without the solenoid. The gear did a pretty quick manicure on the end of my finger. Which by the way is healing well.

About 30 minutes of this 4 hours was first aid which then slowed me down for the remainder of the task. You know when the dog bites you you feed it a little more carefully.

I agree with you it has been a great tractor. I've owned it since new.
But I didn't marry it and it doesn't owe me anything anymore.
So I thought a new tractor would be cheaper than a girl friend and the wife wouldn't move out when the Kubota move in.
Darnit its raining again. Loosing a lot of good Bota flight time.
Thanks for asking.

Better picture of first Bota

We bought this in 1998 the year after we purchased our property. We tilled both, side property lines and planted two rows of baby blue spruce (680 trees) down each side. The JD didn't have a tiller and you now can't buy one, which is why I bought the BX pretty welll loaded.

Wrong Hammer

Allenb,
The hammer I used on the JD was much bigger. The hammer in the picture was the one I used on my own Nucklehead for the trick with the starter manicure.
Finger still hurt more than the hammer to the nucklehead.
Boy sharp eyes.
Next time I better clean the Stable for the Dak Quad Cab before taking pictures therein.

Matches my Ladder?????

Von,
Your comment flew so far over my head even if I had hair it wouldn't have parted.
What are you referring to old eagle eyes?

Re: Matches my Ladder?????

Woodstock,
The green on your step ladder sides! Look at your photo again. Most the I see are orange or yellow. Hey do you think they make them those colors to match our tractors?

Re: Matches my Ladder?????

Von
My eyes are still crossed, not to mention my aching back, from picking up that JD engine (about 70-80lbs) by myself but if I close one eye I can see that your right it does match the JD.
I guess I'll sell it too and get one of the orange ones you talked about.
You know orange is better than green, ladders that is. In Canada, green is the designation for one level of ladder standards and orange is a higher level with yellow being the most stringent.
Only in Canada you say.
