Buying Advice Why do I keep 'what if-ing'?

Something in the (near to)30HP range would do you well. That's 30 PTO HP..........not engine HP.

Crank - if you are still in heavy research mode, and are trying to find things here on Tractor By Net, then look up that Google command for searching a specific site only. It was available on Google a long time ago.... with my lousy memory I can never remember the syntax of the command.

The Search on this site works, in a fashion, but there are bettter tools to use esp. if you are in a hurry.

I currently own a Bobcat Ct122 , which is the same tractor as the ck20 that you're looking at. my dad owns a massey gc2300 subcompact too. Before I bought my tractor I rented a 3xxx series John Deere. What i realized FOR MY PROPERTY, is thst while i loved the larger lift capacity and capabilities of the 30+ hp Deere, it wasnt maneuverable enough for my property.

There hasnt been a job that my Ct122 cant do. Sometimes it may take a lot longer to get it done but eventually it will do it. I would totally recommend renting a tractor for a day or two before buying. It will give you a better idea of your needs and you will get much more comfortable driving it. There are times when I still wish I had a bigger tractor and more lift capacity but I know my tractor is a better fit for this property. by the way, I have lots of trees and hills

Wow, there really is a weath of information on here. The problem I have is that there are no dealers close by....closest one is 2 hrs away, a Kioti and a Deere, then 3 hrs away in another direction is a larger town where most all other tractors can be seen. It seems like whatever used tractor are for sale are either rather old, or relatively new but still a 'pretty penny' where I think I would rather go new to take advantage of a warranty. I would hate to need work done, have to drive a fair distance and also have to pay for the work.

That being said, back to the fun topic of buying a tractor. I wish I had the opportunity to see these machines in action. I do know that this will not be a machine that will always be used. It will assist in weekly chores where required (raking, harrowing manure in the pastures from time to time). But, once I know how and what can be accomplished with this I might take on landscaping projets. For example, my water well crapped out last year. While drilling a new one, i decided to pony up some money a pay for a backhoe to dig a 12' deep trench for a water line to my barn about 300 ft long. When he back filled, he left a mound saying that over the years it will collapse. Well....it hasnt collapsed so I would like to maybe grind it down a bit.

I also have a couple fences to fix. Not sure if renting a 3pth post pounder or buying an auger is the way to go. At the moment I would say I'm 70% CK20 and 30% CK30. I'm waiting for a dealer to call me in a couple of days to discuss prices.

How big are you? I am 6'1", 190 lbs and found the CK20 just too small for me. For an hour or so it was okay, but for extended use, I just felt too cramped and uncomfortable. I have a CK30 for my 2 acres... looking to upgrade to the DK40 as I want more lifting power and a stronger backhoe.

crank 73, about the water line, it takes awhile for the trench to settle in. If all you did was put in a water line then recognize all the dirt that came out has to go back in.

Nothing wrong with a good used older tractor especially if the budget is tight. I have an older Deere that turned forty years old this year and is as good as it ever was. Tractors seem to last longer than most road vehicles. Good luck with your search.

When I was looking last year, I started by looking for used tractors, but had trouble finding one close enough, new enough, with the features I wanted, for any reasonable price. I finally decided that I had exactly one time at my age to buy one, so get one with the features I wanted, with a warranty. For me, that meant cab with heat and air, HST, loader, and at least two rear remotes. Then I needed to decide what size. For my 12 acres of current hay field, several people I trust recommended a 6' brush hog, which translates to roughly 30 PTO HP as a minimum. With the cab, I went up some due to the air conditioning draw, and bought a Kioti DK45SE with 36 PTO HP. The DK45SE is slightly larger than James' DK35SE, which he kindly let me try out a bit last year. I think for my 12 acres I have made the right decision.

Definitely, decide on the size of your implemnts first, and let that dictate the power you need. Then, go to your dealers (won't say local in your case!) and sit on each of the tractors in the power range you need. Each will fit you differently, and the placement and operation of the controls, as well as your comfort, are important. Some tractors will fit you better than others. Try out the ones that fit you best, and make your short list of those you really want. And do check out the dealership - they will be the ones to make or break your tractoring experience when you need implemets, parts, service, and especially any warranty work.

Once you've refined the short list, it is time to start getting quotes. My short list included Massey Ferguson, Kubota, and Kioti. The final factor in my case was the price, as mine came with a free loader and was several thousand less than the other two.

Most of all, have fun looking! And good luck with your decision.
