I agree with the other New England guys that a backhoe is pretty essential for land clearing work here. I've been clearing about 3 acres of land and have bushhogged and FEL'd it to death. I am left with about fourty or fifty stumps that I could not get out with the FEL/grapple and am now knocking them off at a rate of about 5-10 per easy day with the backhoe. Mind you these are not big oaks but rather 5-7 inch trash tree stumps but I could not get them out with my FEL. Also, as I dig the stumps out, I am coming up against rocks that I would be able to lift with the FEL but would have had a very hard time digging out with the FEL.
I got my backhoe only as an after thought but it was a great decision. I'd have a hard time justifying it at this point (too many other tools on the list) but as part of the intial purchase it was relatively easy.
