why do snowblowers have a maximum recommended HP?

I looked up the numbers...our tractor is 28.7 engine HP and 22.7 PTO HP. So it seems like, ,based on the last few posts, that 72" blower may be too much. Maybe the 60" is the best option, or the 52" with wings.

Get the 60"

Don't do the wing thing...

You will inevitably end up with a less than perfect setup and will always have a spoil pile that the wings leave behind.

Had wings on my 51" front mount and ended up trading the blower for a 63"

I would definitely agree with that...

I also think going with a wider blower is better than adding wings since the blower's auger works the whole width to get the snow to the centre blower.

Again, the blower fan size has more bearing on the HP requirement than the units width. I looked at Lucknow's data for regular blowers (i.e. not pull-type). The 5' and 6' have the same 22" x 8" deep fan and Lucknow's recommended HP for both is the same--20 min. to 35 max.

The Yanmar site has a brochure showing regular blowers. The 54" recommends 15 to 25 HP and 64" recommends 15 to 35 HP. Both have fans 22" diam x 6" wide blades. I wonder why the 54" has a lower maximum HP rating than the 64" but the same minimum rating. Yanmar has a 74" unit with recommended 30 to 50 HP. The fan size on this is 24" diam x 8" wide.

Unless you have large, heavy snow dumps I think your tractor would handle a 6'. Your 3 point will easily handle the weight and it's no problem simply to go a bit slower with an HST. You would definitely not have a problem with the 60" and would be best not to go smaller than that.

Lots of solid manufacturers make sizes between 60 & 72". I think those would be well suited for you.

For example Pronovost makes a 62" & 68" width, Landpride makes a 64", etc.

Ok, thanks a bunch everyone. I'll wait for something in the 5'-6' range. I know Meteor makes a 68" as well. I looked at the lucknow yesterday and it's a real shame because it's like new...just too narrow.

Take care.
