Why do some diesels require glow plugs and others don't?

Would that also apply to a 1950's John Deere model 70? I think it had a 2 cylinder 9" bore and 7" stroke and no glow plugs.

No dude, the 70 has spark plugs. It is a gas motor and this discussion is about diesels.
Cool tractor though.

Model 70's were made in both gas and diesel. The diesel engine was started by a 4 cylinder gas (pony) motor.

When IH introduced the 300 and 400 series engines it was amazing to find that the turbo engines started better then the non-turbo's!!!! These are direct injection engines and they would out start many engines used on farms at that time without assist.

They were quieter then other direct injection systems do to there design and probably still quieter then many engines we see today depending on the manufacturer.

The good thing about the precup injectors is that when they do start they normally have less smoke on start-ups. The noise of an engine is still part of the design of the injectors and the piston tops as to how it recieves the fuel.

Working with many different diesels we find compression and the cranking speed make a big difference in cold weather starting.

We have a lot of trade-ins that pass through our yards and from time to time it is the best sales school we could have to have another manufacturer sitting there and to start their engines. We had a newer 120 hour tractor in this summer that would be great for killing mosquito's if you lived near a swamp.

We have a JD 4045T stationary engine that has an oem ether injection system. It automatically injects a small amount of ether depending on the temperature. No glow plugs, and it will start reliably down to -10C. The canister gets replaced every other year.....

We had the same starting fuel arrangement on our snow-blast equipment...Screw in propane type tank. Jy.

I think a lot of it has to do with injection timing. My Ford 1900 has 21-1 compression ratio and injects directyly into the cyl. When the engine is cold you have to use the glowplugs for 15-30 seconds. When the engine is warm it fires right up. Every owner of the compact Fords I have talked to has to use the glowplugswhen the engine is cold.
Bill

Our old 1900 needed to be heated even in 70+ degree weather. Ran like a top, bug it was a bugger to get started when it wasn't warmed up!
