The worst winter months (in southern PA) are January and February. While we might still get snow in March, you know it wont stay around long. July and August are the worst in summer and it's not unusual to see mid-90s, but upper-90s and 100s are rare.

I think people like the change of seasons not so much because they like them all, although some do. Rather because when you're in the season you like the least, you have something to look forward to.

Man, Pete! Are you my long lost brother, or what? The short lifespan of dogs is my biggest complaint in life. My dogs are my best friends in the world (next to my wife), and losing them is the hardest thing that there is. You feel like you'll never get over it!! Luckily my three dogs are young (3 years, 2 years, and a new 11 week old puppy). But the eventuality of losing them is always on my mind.

Brown County is a beautiful area. Been there many times as my sisters went to IU. We are also quite fond of the Mitchel/Bedford area. Spring Mill is one of our favorites. Why don't you register and share in the fun?

Home now is about 50 miles north of Detroit, between Flint and Pontiac in some of the prettiest (my humble opinion) country in southern Michigan. A compact little area called the Hadley Hills. Thousands of acres of state owned land with some houses and small farms stuck in around the edges. We've got 10 acres, which is enough property to take care of, too much a lot of the time. The edges do get raggety from time to time.

Why live there? I work for an auto company and after growing up in the thumb area of Michigan, doing a couple of jobs with the company in other places (Buffalo, Kansas City, Minneapolis) and moved 4 times in 6 years before I was 30. When we came back to Michigan we kind of settled down and found the place my wife and I wanted to spend our years at. Our kids got to grow up (mostly anyway) around a small town with a white clapboard church, good friends, and caring neighbors. We got attached to where we were and I quit saying I'd move every time an opportunity came along. There's something close to 6,000 acres of state land I can walk across the road and get lost in. Sure, it snows a bit sometimes and can get cold during the winter, but it's not all that bad. The Kubota pushes the snow without much effort.

I guess I'm just a Michigan boy that found a way back home to the state with some of the prettiest lakes, rivers, and woods you'll come across. Funny, we kind just settled in and never left.

I grew up in northern Lower Michigan, and moved to South Dakota a few years ago. Work brought me out here, and everything is going just fine. I do miss the trees of Michigan, and I'd rather have Michigan winters. A lot warmer than SD winters, and a lot less wind.

Grew up in lower NY state and happy to have moved out - too damn many people there now. I've been in NH about 14 years now and love it. We bought this place two years ago and are able to have our offices in the same building as the house (it is a monstorous big old connected farm house that I expect to finish work on in 40 years or so/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif We are on the side of a side road and see maybe 2 cars a day (our neighbors down the road). 10 acres surrounded by 750 of apple orchards and woods - it's great!

I'll have to answer this in both from both a macro and micro perspective...

I live in Northern Indiana (not far from Mossroad). I came here 20 years ago for a job after growing up in Indy and graduating from Purdue. I guess I'm a Hoosier at heart. I didn't want to move too far from family, but didn't need to live in my parents back yard either. Turns out, this isn't such a bad place to live as I found when I moved to Detroit (area) for a few years some time back. That was one of those things us car people are just drawn to. No place to settle though, at least for me. Back to South Bend and I got married and have done the whole family thing since. Yes, this is a nice place to live. Excellent cost of living, decent bike riding right out my back door and plenty of things to do.

So why am I moving to Michigan next year, seemingly abandoning my Hoosier heritage? Time for that micro-perspective. My wife's family is all within a few miles of us. We want to stay close (at least she does /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) but we are not thrilled with the schools where we live now (huge school system (Mossroad: PHM)). Also, we wanted some property within proximity to those in-laws. All signs pointed to Michigan. The school system we are moving into is fantastic and small and we are only three miles further from the relatives. Plenty of open land thanks to Michigans restrictions on subdividing property and hey, I've lived in Michigan before.

So that's why I live where I do /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Settled in eastern North Carolina cause that is where my last duty station was. Spent 22 years in the Marine Corps moving every 3-4 years, so I owed it to my family to stay in one place for a while, been here now since 92. Have 6.5 acres, live on a private dirt road I maintain, have a pond, and a wonderful family, what more could you ask for?

I don't cry often, but sometimes when I look at my nine year old Alpha male with his white muzzle and know that my time with him is drawing to a close...and the tears begin to flow. When our time comes, Tamara and I want to be buried with our goldens.
