Why does a dog roll in its own feces?

Are you using some form of scented dog shampoo (on the dog - not yourself)? Maybe they don't like that. Or if you wash their bedding or put something scented on their bedding that they don't like then they may be trying to get rid of that scent.

Might want to change the dogs diet (gradually) to a different base product (instead of chicken & rice try something like beef & corn).

Otherwise, keep an eye on him and scoop it up as soon as it goes down. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Years ago.. when I had a jeep.. and not a farm.. I took my dog fishing w/ me. She had found the most rotten fish to roll in.. on the ride back home.. I had to light up a smoke so I wouldn't gag!

I was told the same thing from a vet in my family. But she said in the end, he may never stop doing it.

I don't seem to have that problem.....Mine rolls around in everyone elses mess. Dear, neighborhood dogs, cow patties, you name it. Funny thing though.....she does it whether there's a mess or not. Sometimes she'll find a spot in the grass, scratch at it with her paw, pretend to be an ant eater and then dive into the spot head first. I thought she was a pig in dogs clothing.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

They do it to cover their sent for hunting. This way they smell like a big pile of poo rather then a preditor.

I have a Lab she will go as far from the house as she can but stay in the yard to drop off a load. Even when when were having a hurricane. I though I would have to go get her in the storm. She will walk way around any that is there too. But let there be a danp or muddy spot and she will find it before coming in the house

My girlfriends dog loves it. It's a standard poodle no doubt (a black one at that). This dog likes to snap one off and then come back to it for an afternoon snack. I think it likes eating it's poo better than the dog food it gets. It has never rolled in it, or at least I haven't noticed any fecal matter in its coat, it just like eating it. What's up with that?
The dog doesn't like to swim either, but I bet you any money that if a corn eyed brown trout went floating by the dock it would jump right in to get it! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
