I have a Ford 770 FEL on my 1700. When I put the FEL into float position, the bucket goes up. Obviously, this isn`t right. The original Cross two-function control did this but I put a new three-function Cross control on it and it still does the same. What`s that all about?

It is maybe likely that the line from the control valve back to tank is too small creating too much back pressure, and this back pressure is putting more force on the piston ends of the cylinders than the rod ends, because the the piston ends have the bigger areas. (remember F=PxA)

does boom move up when valve control lever is pulled rearward

When in float, none of the work ports should get pressure and they should be open to tank.

The fact that the loader is raising points to something getting pressure.

Do you have pictures of how the valve is plumbed? Was this new valve actually a new valve? Or something repurposed? Does it have power beyond feeding the 3ph? Did the new valve have PB and appropriate plug?

Does the valve have detent option on both lift - lower and curl - dump?
If yes is it possible you have the regen spool connected to lift - lower and float on the curl - dump?

It is a brand new Cross exactly like the original except that it has an added control which I am going to use for a hydraulic top link. It does have PB that is plugged. The boom does move up when the lever is pulled rearward. The valve only has detent on the down stroke of the boom. Power beyond does not feed the 3 point. The FEL is fed from an adapter that is bolted between the block that originally fed the 3 point and the lift housing. Rodrocket may have a good point. The original hoses are only 3/8" whereas the pressure and feed ports on the control are 3/4". It was that way when I got it and didn`t have any problems with the FEL other than the float problem. I think the adapter is threaded for 3/8" so a larger hose may not be feasible (unless I make a new adapter with a bigger return port). Thanks for all the input.

Do you have a diagram of the new valve? Float should be A and B ports tied to tank as LD1 described. I think 3/8 hose is plenty big enough for the tank line.

This is the control I bought. 1 is the hose from the pump, 2 is the return, 3 and 4 control the boom, 5 and 6 control the bucket and the other two will control the hydraulic top link when I get a cylinder..

Is your loader controlled by a joystick ? My tractor also does that sometimes while plowing snow with the joystick in the float position but in my case I know exactly what’s causing it…….. it’s operator error ! ………I unknowingly sometimes move the joystick slightly to the left which causes the bucket to curl up a little ……. If I pay closer attention and don’t unintentionally put leftward pressure on the joystick everything works like it’s supposed to.

If valve has PB option you should have seven hoses connected to the valve. If PB is supposed to functioning and you block the PB port pump flow is being forced over the relief any time the valve is not in use. Depending on valve design this might also pressurize the float circuit.
