We have some areas here in Arkansas that are infested with army worms that eat everything in sight. Grasshoppers are all in my pasture by the thousands but soon cold weather will stop them. I love my cab for the AC and heat and sometimes I listen to the radio also.
Not jealousy so much as prudence...I have never had a cab tractor and it seems like it would be wonderful except it seems to me with a cab you cannot hear the sound of your equipment and I have pulled cultivators and had a pin break and a connection to one of the lift arms come loose and was able to stop the tractor immediately...that cultivator could have climbed up the back tire and taken me out...and if not that it would have broken the lift arm and who knows what else...there have been other instances where me being able to hear the machine saved either me or the tractor...I sure don't understand how folks can operate a tractor with the radio blaring, AC on and not worry about the noises they are missing - plus how do you keep a nice tan...
I just can't believe how many bugs attach themselves to the Cab. When I had the OS I knew it was bad (pushed me to a cab) but this really shows the extent of it!
It also shows me how tuff my grandfather was. Over 60 years he worked these fields on OS tractors. 2 Allis WDs, Farmall SuperC, Farmall H. He'd never complain, even when he'd hit a ground hive. All he would do is somehow stumble back to the house (after being stung mulitple times) lay down for a while and then turn around go right back out!
I think OS tractors are great, Just not for brush hogging!
My choice of open station was financial only. I would still like to get a cab but was not going to wait any longer to get my tractor. Enjoy the cab!
As for hearing noises, I use hearing protection when running my open station and would envision that the cab affords some reduction in noise but not as much as good hearing protection.

Even with a cab your hearing becomes selective to the equipment you are using ... I can listen to the tractor engine, the radio and the piece of equipment ... you just get a feel for those things.
you see thats where a good cab comes in,there are certain cabs that you cant hear the equipment running.but cabs are good for those that cant take the heat or cold for some reason or another.
