Why I will NEVER have a smart house

Irrevelant far as I'm concerned because I'm paying for the consumption. Upgrade the system if it's an issue.
Don"t hold your breath on upgrading..

I understand where you are coming from but it’s super useful. I have been half way to the lake of the ozarks and realized I left the ac on 74. It sure is nice to pull out the phone and set it to 80, saving a few bucks that weekend. When we leave the lake, pull out the phone and set it back to 74 and house is cool by the time we arrive.

They tried to do this to me as well, it was a one click opt out and done, no big deal.

the internet of things is super useful.

When your system finally dies, if no one does a load calculation, run. Your home is a prime example of 50% of the contractors who will replace the system with the same size without even asking questions. Just answer their questions and if they come back even with a 4 ton system, do not use them unless they show and explain their load calc.

ALL the HVAC contractors around here use "how many square feet is it". And size accordingly. I required my contractor to do the Manual J calculations and after seeing what he did I gave up because I realized he just didn't understand what he was doing. Is there any place that will do the manual J calcs (for a small fee)?

I've done some thermal estimations, but have a problem with what to use for the slab. I don't know what the ground temperature is nor the "R" or "U" values for concrete. Is there some place to find out?

According to a 'concrete association' website, concrete has a R value of only about 1 per 8" of concrete. My guess is a ground temp of 60dF would be a good start for Texas.
