( How long before some manufacturer combines an hst with (wrong specific item but for lack of a better term) 'lock-up torque converter' like modern auto trannys in cars? Seems like you could get most of the good of both approaches in one tranny. Steady pull - straight through lock up - soon as you dicate speed change - let 'er go normal hst. )

case did it in the 70's, i don't know that it really locks up, but our 580 ck TLB has a torque converter, that works through a 4 speed standard tranny, basicaly a hydro shuttly, that you can shift w/o stoping, or depressing the peddle.

Why does any of this matter? Does the tractor still work and do it's job weather it's a Hydro or Gear? I have a Hydro, and it does everything I've ever wanted it to do, it just does it a little bit easier than shifting gears.

This whole thread was started by RAT just to perk things up as we had gotten quite serious and sensitive about the HST and GEAR discussion. Don't take it too seriously. If you read close to the top where Henro posted and then read RAT's reply a little later, you'll see it's not serious. John

OK, boys, it's about time we started talking about gear 3PHs and gear FELS! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Cool - completely mechanical tractors! Then, we can get rid of these darn deisels and get some steam engines to power them. Serious torque! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I can envision a tractor with an array of gearshifts or levers - one for the 3ph lift (with shuttle), two for the FEL (with shuttles), one for the drive (with shuttle). Naturally, you'd still have your PTO levers, 4wd lever, etc. Top and tilt would add a couple more! You know, you could almost conceive of making it work, except the clutch pedals would be a nightmare! Maybe you'd need a two-seater in order to accomodate an extra operator! (or fireman, given Chris' steam proposal)

( Why is HST so much better then gear drives at heating up the hydraulic oil then a gear drive? It seems that my International gets the oil somewhere around 165 to 170 degrees (it has no loader) whereas my L3830 bumps it up to about 190 degrees on it's hard worked days. Could the difference explain where the dreaded HST loss of energy is culminated? )

Our hydro tractors are horribly inefficient and waste huge amouts of power compared to a geared tractor. These tractors are so bad they have to have a diesel engine to run them. The hydro tractors shameful waste of energy, as evidenced by superheated hydraulic fluid, actually is contributing to global warming.

Geared tractors on the other hand are so efficient that it hardly takes any energy to run them at all. They are so efficient that they could have peddles for the operator to generate power vs a diesel engine. This amazing efficiency is partly owed to the geared tractor buyers philosophy of keeping everything simple and mechanical. Don't need know stinkin electronics or other fancy stuff. Sadly geared tractors still need desiel engine cause the operators are to lazy to peddle them.
