Why is HST so much better then gear drives...

Gear guys are not really anti-technology - how about we add an electronically controlled variable speed hydraulic drive to deliver coal to the boiler. I don't want to have to shovel! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They have had them for at least 40 years. The plant I work in has 4 of them,we call them "coal feeders" They speed up and down depending on the what the demand is for the steam load.

Really new ideas are few and far between! The desire to aviod the really nasty jobs (like shoveling coal) leads one to the same solutions as the last guy who thought about it.

While you are at it, tell 'em about clinkers. Maybe they'll turn out to be too lazy for steam power.

What I am talking about is in a power plant that generates steam by the hundreds of thousand pounds per hour, and burns hundreds of tons of coal a day. I am sure when you made your statement you were not thinking of a full size power plant.
These are quite complex/large operations.

Hey, I got 2 cars and one truck with standard shift. I'm tired of shifting. With diff. lock and 4wd I don't need or want a shifting lever. I need that hand for doing shots of Jager!!!!
I WANT MY HST NOW!!!!! Whoops....sorry got over whelmed with the thought of not having to shift.

ahhhhh! A MAN AFTER MY OWN HEART. Steam power!!! nothing like a big old tractor with a good boiler on it, don't think they had hydro tho? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Guys,
I've only ever had one tractor and it has gears that I have to change. I guess I really blew it. It also has a pedal for increasing the speed and one for slowing down. Can't a good tractor mfg. combine all these (confusing do-hickeys) into one shifter like on the Corvair? bw
