Rotary Cutter Why is my bush hog hitting my rear tires?

The above link should take you to a good picture of what your hitch SHOULD look like.

Take a ride to a TSC or anywhere that sells King Kutter mowers and look at the condition/configuration of the 3-point frame components. Then look at yours. A machine shop could straighten them if they know what shape they're shooting for, OR, you MIGHT be able to get them NEW from King Kutter for a reasonable price (through TSC) I've bought tines for a KK tiller and was suprised at how reasonable those folks are with their parts prices.

You can also order parts online via their website.

my lift arms on a JD 4500 are about the same as yours, I chewed a rear tire up one afternoon on the way back to the barn, I'd lost one of the pins in the telescoping rods and didn't know it, try this, lift the hog just enough off the ground so you can push it to the left and right by its wheel and watch the telescoping arms, then place the pins in the holes that will stop the excess sway, I ended up having to buy a new telescoping rod because the sway bent it. JD's rods are made from soft metal and when I tried to straighten it, it cracked even more, one other thing, this taught me to constantly look back at the attachment, even when not having it in use

Get a replacement, and consider a proper toplink pin while you're at it. //greg//
What's wrong with using that pin?

When I pick up my bush hog high enough, it'll actualy hit the rear tires. Is this right. I wouldn't think it should.

I moved the top link to the bottom hole (from the advice on here, thanks!) and that allowed me to actually pick the bush hog wheel off of the ground- it wasn't before.

In looking at King Kutter's website, their bush hog looks like the forward lifting frame is perpendicular to the mower deck. Where as mine looks to be bent. Would this throw it off?

If you can, study out the pics and tell me what I'm doing wrong. What are all of these other adjustments; the two holes for the top link, why do the lift arms have places to mount them on the bottom and top of the axle, what are the other holes for in the lift arms, anything else you can help me with? My old 8N didn't have near as many settings.......or it didn't seem as complicated....
The hitch frame on the bushog is bent. The hitch points for the lower lift arms have been spread too wide, bending the frame and causing the toplink point to be pulled downward. This point is linked to the struts that brace the frame to the back and thus it affects the carry attitude along with the lift behavior. Straighten to renew correct geometry and it will work. There is also an extremely important part missing that could have caused the damage. The top linkpoint on a bh should be articulated so that the tailwheel can follow the ground without the liftarms rising as you go thru dips.

Just an incidental recommendation really. It fills the hole, but it's not an actual Cat 1 toplink pin (3rd from the upper right). Field expediency notwithstanding, I only use hitch pins (upper left) for indexing or drawbars.

I think the hitch pins on the "brush hog" should be in the lower holes, not the upper holes. That way the lift ams would be parallel to the ground not pointing up. Does that make sense?

Good Afternoon alvanko,
It sure makes sense to me ;) I agree 110 % !:)

If the arms were parallel when hooked to the bushog it would push the whole mower away from the tires !

BTW you might think about a shaft guard for that PTO shaft !

If you look at the image of the yellow KKutter in Flatheadyoungins post, you can clearly see, the hitch pins are in the correct position.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. That blue RC is not a KingKutter. Note that the pins - in their present location - are measurably higher off the deck than those in the (yellow) KK picture.

Moving the pins on FlatHead's blue rotary cutter to the bottom holes - like those in the attachment below - will move the deck measureably away from the tractor tires. Note also the flexible toplink bracket

It looks to me that in picture 4 the bushhog frame is bent or twisted. Looks like someone backed into something bending the 3 pt. arm. I can't tell about the left side but if that arm was straight (like Greg's pic or the KK pic shows) the cutter would be a lot further away from the tires. After looking closely at pic 3 it does appear the frame is twisted.
