Why is the JD 3005 less expensive than a 2320?

   / Why is the JD 3005 less expensive than a 2320? #11
At the DOT site they don't even have the 3005 listed but I compared the 790 and one thing that sticks out right away is that the 790 only has an 815lb Hitch Lift capacity vs 1150 for the 2320.

Yep, that's correct and that's quite adequate for any implement that the 3005/790 can power. It is not adequate if you intend to move round bales of hay (and the 2320 isn't big enough or heavy enough to move round bales of hay either).

Too many folks get hung up on specs, rather what is really usable. Advertised specs are there to sell a machine and do not necessarily reflect real world capabilities.

That's correct, and was typical for all the early JD smaller frame compacts.

Roy makes some good statements. The tractor itself needs to be heavier to be able to use larger hitch capacities. There is only so much you can do (safely) with adding ballast.

I was going to say in my post that I'm not sure anyone would ever need more than 800lbs of lift once I thought about it.

Tho the aerator I intend to use weighs 700 lbs.

But I can't imagine many implements heavier than that.

The 2320 is a 20 series tractor. Price is largely determined by the number of features a tractor has, and the 2320 has more features than does a 3005. For someone who just needs a really proven, stout and simple tractor the 3005 is a potential choice. In my opinion, it is not a good machine for a landscaper unless they need to use it only rarely.

As much as I like the 3005/790 tractor, I've got to agree with John. The 790's are pretty bulletproof with an operator who knows how to use (and not abuse) a clutch. Equipment that is operated by others then the owners is often abused.

Roy is pretty easy to agree with. ;) I also had a 790 before getting into my current tractor. The 790 is pretty light but it is also pretty well balanced and its hydraulics can pick up most implements that it is rated for. I had a heavy disc and tiller on the back of mine....and it always picked up a bucket full of dirt.

But still.....it would not work very well with a HD rear cutter (like an MX 5) and lacked the hydraulic capacity for things like a grapple or my stump grinder, etc. The incremental improvements from one model to the next can provide hours of comparisons....you need to KNOW what you want the tractor to do and what kinda implements you want to work with....and that comes partly from experience.

Oh yes, the Thirty-0-Five.

Look to it's predecessor's for a history lesson of a very reliable tractor. I am happy with one of them in the 770.

In fact, as I dream of a new machine in it's class...it points me right back to the....770. I am not sure I could replace it and be happy.??

At this point, with my needs, the only new tractor that I would consider replaceing the 770 with would be a Kubota L2800.

The trouble with that is...It Ain't Green.!!

Also, I sometimes chuckle at the 800lbs. of lift at the 3pt. arms on the 3005. Seriously, how much does anyone realistically need to lift.?? I can't ever imagine needing to lift more than 800lbs. My 64" snowblower weighs 500 and my ballast box is about 700lbs.

Why does anyone need more lifting capacity on a tractor of this size.?? How much do tillers weigh.??

Blasphemer! lol

That's what I was thinking too. The aerator I will use weighs over 700 though, and honestly the 3005 is right up my alley but a little on the big side for my needs. I can get a smaller tractor in more places. :)

What escapes me though is why such a heavy duty unit like the 05 has such a low lift capacity.

What dictates lift capacity? Hyd Cylinder size?

We bought some property and I requested that the owner remove a lot of old junk on it. Before closing, we were down there some when he was there with a JD790. I watched and helped him some load stuff on his trailer with the 790. At the time I mostly was just thinking how great it would be to have a tractor like that with a FEL.

Now that I have one with a FEL, but HST instead of direct transmission, I remember back how much more effort it was for him using the FEL and repositioning the tractor vs the HST. The HST is a big advantage especially when repositioning or working in fairly tight quarters like I can imagine in landscaping. Especially when you are "on the clock" vs just doing something on your own.
