Why oh why?

It seems that the most simple attachment is the most costly. Take a seed speader, the cheapest I can find is a 350lb for $459.00. We're talking about a large funnel over a rotating plate to sling the seed out. When you think about it an equivalant drag behind ATV with a similiar weight capacity cost about half that. Seems I have time on my hands to think about more attachments to buy.

Look for a used on on the side of the road.. i got a nice spreader that way for 150$.. needed prime and paint, and I had to unstick the pto shaft, and lube the box... works fine..

I never seem to be able to find those used bargains. There could be several reasons. Small tractors, planting food plots, etc etc is very popular around here. Disks, spreaders, plows, rotary cutters, etc seem to be in high demand. This keeps prices up. The other reason is that I might get scared off when I see something that looks real used. As soundguy says, these can be real deals if you have the know-how and expertise to makes some minor repairs. I usually just assume its beyond me, but I guess you don't know unless you try.

My rotary cutter was used. But it wasn't used much.....and I didn't get a huge deal either.

I'm also in the market for a spreader. They do seem over priced.

Yeah.. buying used you have to check the condition.. or realize you will be fixing it.

On my unit.. it had a 'non serviceable' gear box.. the box itself had bolts holding the halves together.. but a box frame of sheet metal was formed around it to make the bottom bracket of the spreader.. this frame was spot welded togethere! To get to the box I would have had to have drilled about 10 3/8 holes thru the spot welds.. then remov the box, servise, and then either weld back up the frame.. or use bolts. Sinc ethe box was aluminum, I just drilled a hole in the top corner and mounted it so the oil running out carried the chips, then greased up a tap and tapped threads in for a grease fitting.. then pumped full of JD corn head grease .. works great.. Top seal weeps a little in the heat.. pto seal is fine.. no problems in a few years now.

BUYER OF USED EQUIPMENT BEWARE:
I bought a used spreader that had been used only 1 time to spread rye grass seed. It was in excellent condition (looked brand new). Apparently, however, the unit came without a zert fitting on the gearbox - just a threaded plug.
If the previous owner had used the unit for an extended time he undoubtedly would have ruined the gearbox by not keeping it greased. I pulled the plug (found the gearbox had grease in it) and installed a zert fitting. All is well now but imagine if he kept using it without greasing the gearbox?

$459 of your dollars is cheap!! I am about to buy a new fertilizer / seed spreader of the "cheap" conical hopper and disk thrower type and will be spending about $700 Australian. As your dollar and our dollar are not far apart, you are getting a bargain (relative to mine).

Just picked up from TSC a 500lb Cosmo seed/fertilizer spreader for $449.00. I have seen them as high as ~$800 for a 900lb. Still seems like a high price for a piece of equipment that you use about 2 times a year.
