Well, here is yet another variant on this topic. Admittedly, for me and I would imagine a high percentage of TBN viewers, buying a new machine that cannot be pragmatically justified on a profit and loss ledger IS A BIG DEAL! Obviously we all have similar motivations to acquire a CUT but our personalities affect how we go about the acquisition.
For me, a CUT/TLB had become a necessity again after many years of not having my own machine. Renting from the arrogant A$$es at the U Rent it was becoming intolerable so I began to look at used TLBs, or else the separate pieces that I would cobble together. I am a frugal woman, always have been and perhaps I am changing in my senior years...but the stuff I was seeing was not acceptable for my purchase. I started to consider new pieces. The hunt began in the late winter, and by mid May I had conditioned myself to what the ball park cost would be, and may I say, got used to it? Parting with $20K IS PAINFUL!!!! To make it even more painful I agonized over the specs for a wide variety of CUT's instead of firmly establishing my primary requirements and then filtering out all the others. Lurking on TBN was immensley useful for which I thank all who have posted in the various forums. These post became a sort of road map thru the morass of possibilities and gave me some direction in my search. This is where I first learned of Kioti, and Googled every hit on the subject. I live in a rather isolated small ranching community in Western Arkansas. The local NH, JD, and Mahindra dealers all tried the condescending "ignorant little woman" crap on me and alienated me with their attitudes, not necessarily their machinery. The closest Kioti dealer was a 2 hr trip, but I had to see a CK and kick the tires before getting any more interested. Having looked at the only CK this dealer had on the lot (a 30 gear) I was very impressed with the design, fit, and finish. I am engineering trained and qualified to evaluate farm equipment, having owned, operated and repaired same for many years while in the ranching business. I made the decision to begin seeking a Kioti dealer who was competitive and competent. My non- farmer status dictated that I buy out of state. Kioti's web page dealer search engine is only capable of going out 100 miles which did not fit my needs, and the personnel I contacted at HQ were not helpful in expanding my search radius. This put dealers with a good web presense at a big advantage. Rivera's in Donna TX won my heart hands down and got the sale based on their web site and their prompt courteous communication. So far they have met all my expectations in a fast, friendly and courteous way. I would highly recommend them even if ther location seems too distant for you. Phil arranged for an awesome 600 mile shipping deal at less than a buck a mile within a week of closing the contract. Now, after 20+ hours of loader and backhoe work I am finally at peace with this huge indulgence in a new toy. She doesn't eliminate 100% of the shovel, rake and hoe work, but she does the heavy lifting effortlessly.
In closing on topic I will say that the tough work of smart shopping for a CUT must certainly qualify us to contribute to the TBN forums. On the down side it may also harden us from being entirely open minded to the pro's and con's of all the other CUT's availabe to us. A bad experience with brand "A" or "B"'s dealership can also skew our opinion about the machinery they sell. Like team sports, we may become convinced that our team is the best simply because we worked hard in it and we won a few competitions. Shoppers who seek and find TBN will benifit greatly by lurking and querying from those who have already run the gauntlett, while at the same time remaining aware of a proud tractor owners potential for overzealous promotion of superiority in his machinery brand. Best wishes to all you who seek and agonize over your CUT purchase. My effort was well worth the work.

Dear grdngrrl,
Like you I also purchased from Phil at Rivera's in Donner ,Texas . It was a long way to go for a DK45 TLB but it amounted to a $8000 savings over my local Kioti Dealer for the same dang thing ! It was a 5400 mile round trip for me so the wife and I saw a lot of the old U.S. I did wait until I got there to pick up a 20' trailer for the haul back . I would gladly reconmend then to anyone looking to buy . Enjoy the tractor .

Very nice post. Glad that you found everything that you were looking for.

This is a very good post. I think it describes the search that many go through.
I think you'll find that the overzealous posters are usually so simply because someone who doesn't own a Kioti comes to this forum only to stir up trouble, which in turn leads some Kioti owners to go to other threads to do the same. It's a shame, but it's human nature I suppose.
The search for a tractor can, indeed, be a daunting task. I searched for one year before deciding on Kioti which I found out about the day I bought. I had been through the gauntlet of other brands and good and bad dealers already, so when I found the Kioti and a great, friendly dealer, I made the deal on the spot, with no regrets.
I would imagine that I would be just about as happy with any brand I may have ended with, but the Kioti represented a significant savings for me and helped me afford a backhoe as well, so, for me, it was a great find.

Excellent post grdngrrl!

I will make one comment on....
<font color="blue"> Kioti's web page dealer search engine is only capable of going out 100 miles which did not fit my needs, </font>

The workaround is, input a zip code 200 miles away. By inserting 'any USA zip code' the Kioti dealer search engine will give you dealers within a hundred mile radius of that zip code. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This is an excellent and thoughtful post, I think you got a great tractor for your needs. But I do have one question about a statement you made.

What did you mean by this? <font color="red"> My non- farmer status dictated that I buy out of state. </font>

IN Arknasas, tractor sales are exempt from sales tax if used for "production of food or fiber as a business". so if you are buying for a landscape business or to mow your lawn a dealer in Arknasas would have to charge sales tax, but a dealer in Texas who delivers would not have to charge sales tax. Yes I was the dealer who was a two hour drive away. ( I'm hoping she bought from Texas because of the sales tax issue and not because she felt I was incompetent.) No complaint on my part, I have sent dozens of tractors out of state and collect no Arkansas sales tax on those...

Hey, thanks Chip for the concise reply to Bob's query. And yes, attempting to avoid 1500 bucks in sales tax was my objective. I certainly had no problem with you or your operation. In fact, I was quite impressed with the prompt attention I got from your mechanic when I arrived on the lot and started crawling all over yer CK 30. After a few questions he sized me up quickly and realized that I knew machinery. But then maybe he wanted to get a good look at my zebra striped motorcycle too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
And speaking of avoiding taxes....YIKERS, I just got the real estate reassessment on my properties in the mail today. Ooooo, I'm gonn'a be limping after paying next years county taxes /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well I would very strongly caution you to PAY YOUR TAXES. This issue is often discussed here on TBN. I'm sure many folks get away with avoiding their taxes but I am also sure that many get an ugly surprise (it has been reported here on TBN) when they not only get a tax bill but they also get a bill for interest and penalty. Usually the bill arrives about 2 years after the purchase. Under most state laws (probably about 48 out of 50) you would owe your state sales taxes to your HOME state at your HOME state's tax rate. In most instances, this tax is called "use" tax. It is substituted for sales tax when you make an out of state purchase and bring the goods into the home state. Failure to pay this tax is blatently illegal. Reporting your actions here on TBN are proof that you know that the tax is due (you said you are trying to avoid paying them) and that could easily be held against you by your state's revenue department, although ignorance of the law is not considered an excuse, it is often used to provide some level of lenieny.

I am not judging you, just trying to give you fair warning of what could happen, and trying to warn some of the other new folks who may try the same thing.

DISCLAIMER :: I am not a certified tax accountant nor am I a financial planner, however I am regularly called to testify before city, county & state governmental bodies as an "Expert Witness" on issues of excise taxes and how imposing those taxes impacts businesses, leads to illegal activity, and may reduce governmental revenue projections dramatically. I have testified in the House and in the Senates of several midwestern states. Further, I have been used as a witness in federal trials on similar issues.

Good point Bob, I always disclose that tax liability may be due in an out of state customers home state and to check with local authorities. Somehow I get the feeling that that does not happen often...
One sure way for a tax authority to find out about a major out of state purchase is if it is financed, there will be a UCC filing in the very county the property is to located. I think these are still a mtter of public record.

arkansas has a new sticker program for heavy equipment, wouldn't surprise me to see it on farm equipment someday too. You get your sticker when you pay your sales/use tax or provide an exemption form.

bluechip . . . I applaud you for pointing it out. Some dealers do the opposite and actually advertise that they will sell it to you "tax free" because you are out of state.

I think some folks are simply unaware. Others are very aware and are trying to beat the system, but when those back tax bills come in, they are often more than DOUBLE the original tax amount because of interest and penalty. Typical penalties are 100% of the orginal tax bill. Then add interest for a year or two to BOTH the penalty and the original tax amount.

I second/third the motion that you put forth a very well written and thoughtful post.

For the most part I have not seen too many TBN'ers bad-talk other tractor brands. I can honestly say that of all the reading and talking I have done the only brand bashing I have come across was by Kubota dealers beating on Kioti (all four I talked to did this). I realize this isn't reflective of the whole world but it was an interesting development I noted during my own search (which is nearly over).

bluechip, it took an open and honest person to weigh-in with your reply. That was nice to see.

It's funny when I was buying the Kubota dealers did the same to me. I guess that's one reason why I'm a Kioti owner today. Also my Local JD did the same thing.

Regards

Glen

I think it's better to talk up what your selling as opposed to bashing the competition. Sounds like these guys were skeered of their competition. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I agree, and it is getting easier and easier as Kioti gets better and better!

Not to add coal to the fire, but an acquaintance of mine (wouldn't call him a friend) works for the IRS and he told me that when they do catch people who have intentionally avoided paying tax, the general rule now is for the IRS to conduct a full audit. Not a very appealing prospect.

And, no, I do not report anyone to the IRS. Since the discussion got to the avoiding sales tax, I just thought that I'd point out that, if caught, expect a full audit of several years worth of your tax returns. I'm sort of surprised the dealer where you purchased didn't offer a casual warning to such. Maybe they did, and you just didn't mention it. I really can't imagine a reputable dealer not. Since I live in the corner of 3 different states, and with internet buying getting big, dealers I know are getting down right ticked at losing a sale because of a sales tax issue. I think one of them has made an anonymous tip to the IRS a time or two when a customer has rubbed the loss of sale in their face.
