Why people tresspass

I haven't had too many issues on our property that we bought last year. A few neighbors who used to have free reign when the previous owners were here, but it didn't take much more than a hint to keep them off. Anyone that asks is welcome, I just don't take to folks that assume it's theirs. One neighbor in particular decided to drive his golf cart through our trails while we were on vacation one week. He has about 10 acres. If I decided to go drive around on his 10 acres, I have no doubt that he'd have a problem with it, but for some reason in his mind it's ok for him to cruise around on my 110.

Before we bought the place we're on now, my wife and I ran a horse farm for a lady who lived in Germany. It was a total of 370 acres. Mostly pecan farm and had a neighborhood to one side and a pond. She asked me to keep folks off if at all possible. It was a full time job keeping folks out of the pond and kids from riding dirtbikes all over the farm. For the most part the folks fishing were ok with it when I explained that it was private property and pointed out the four signs around the pond. Only a couple who were repeat violators. It was the kids on dirtbikes that were the main issue. I even went to parents, but they didn't care either. One kid I kicked off 3 or 4 times then followed him home and talked to his folks. They kind of blew me off. A week later, we kick the dad off the property while he's riding a dirtbike on the power lines. He had the nerve to argue that power lines were public property. It's no wonder his kid is an idiot.

I don't understand why it's so hard for folks to understand if you don't own it, stay off of it. I'm very glad to be away from there as it actually caused my stress level to rise. Every time I heard a dirtbike, I'd dart outside to listen and see if it was on the farm. It was ridiculous.

One humorous story, I was deer hunting one morning. It was a bit of an impromptu hunt and I was just sitting on the ground leaning against one of the pecan trees at the back of the property. Often deer would come from behind me towards the thick trees in front of me. I heard one coming my way from a long way off as they were very easy to hear with all the leaves on the ground. I decided I'd wait until it was close and get ready to shoot and wait for it to go by me. I hear it turn and start heading to my right so I wait for it to get close then spin around the tree to get a look. It's a jogger. They see me in my orange vest come around the tree with 30.06 in hand and the absolutely SPRINT the rest of the way home. I had to leave cause I couldn't stop laughing at what they must have been thinking. They didn't slow down the rest of the way home.

I'm sure it's also the case that, even if there are posted signs, when somebody sees or knows that somebody else trespassed & got away with it, they figure it's OK for them to do it, too (monkey see, monkey do). And, "OK, then, so nobody's enforcing it."

This is not Politically correct...no PC here..but it brings to mind an "Armed Society is a Polite Society "

Isn't it a shame that folks like us spend a lot of money to buy land, put in lakes and ponds and stock them with fish for trespassers to catch and take, build fences etc. and have to put up with with what is basically a criminal element in our society that has no respect for private property and we pay the very high property taxes ...not them ! Just go figure..and when you call the sheriff..it gets a yawn, since it is not a murder or bank robbery only a few fish stolen..etc.

Bob ... I couldn't tell if you were kidding? What was not PC about my post? It wasn't intentional, if there is something not PC about it.

The next guy you catch fishing, just walk over to his tackle box and open it up. Tell him you're looking for anything you can use in there because you like "just fishing" too. Tell him since he is using your land it is only fair that you can use his tackle.;)

Never understood trespassing. I go to great pain to get permission from the owner when I track shot deer out of the club property. Sometimes it leads to curious situations - approaching housewife in ghillie suit makes me bit nervous:D

Stepping back for a second..... I've had a foot in this area all my life. I am known and folks either come to say hello, visit or fish or they stay away. Some I've know over 40 years. People's take on property pretty much suits their purpose. "Transplants" from the city are commonly accused of putting up fences around their property to keep locals out (bad) and also of trespassing on local farm land (also bad). Tourists in turn complain about the farmer's fences that keep them out and the locals who trespass against their property. I am generalizing of course. The point is around here it gets presented as transplant vs local, but really the problem people are bird's of a feather.
Whenever it comes up in conversation I like to give examples of local vs local to make my point. A couple purpose build fences can be seen from my yard and I can give the names of the people involved.

I have couple of neighbors (we moved here about same time) who tried to be nice and let people on as long as they asked - They are constantly dealing with issues and wish they never had started it. Give people an inch and they take a mile.

I shut everything down ASAP and enforced. People leave me alone - I agree with some of the previous posts - Got to approach people like you aint takin' no **** from anybody - They are wrong PERIOD. If they want to escalate it they can. Forunately no one has wanted to escalate it. I just can't stand being walked all over.

Had one guy ask my neighbor to hunt at his house. He said "Sure how about a key to your hunting camp? - I always wanted to hunt up there" Well the jerk didn't want to share HIS hunting ground.
