Why so many handles?

As most of us do, I frequent quite a few other boards.. many of them tractor.. or at least antique or related.. some utterly unrelated...

I've run into a good many people from other forums.. all using different handles. Many times I find people on very similar forums.. using very different handles... That always made me wonder.. why have different handles.. aside for the obvious issues of a handle being taken... of which people usually use a similar handle.. or alternator spelling... etc..

I know of a few such situations where different handles are in use, and the 'other' handles were available.. so it has always made me wonder.. In a few cases.. i have noticed the difference due to unique info in profiles.. or perhaps a unique custom avatar.. etc..

any opinions on this?

I've always wonderd if this was so a user could get away with something at one forum.. and not be 'tagged' at another..etc.... IE.. like being a jerk in one place / type of forum ( perhaps an unmoderated / flame forum).. and then have an alter ego somewhere else???

I'm on different forums but I use the same handle on all of them for my ease. It's to much trouble to try and keep track different forum names just to be witty.
I like guns, knives, flashlights and some politics, to name a few. If you ever run across a "sunspot", most likely it is me.
I'm using the owl avator because he lived in a tree in my front yard for many months and I liked watching him and his mate. That is subject to change but not my handle.

That is the only reason I have ever been able to come up with. I use the same handle or like you said one very similar on other sites.

I'm like Sunspot...I try to keep my same handle on the different boards. However, I guess some people are more paranoid than others. You could do a Google search on a particular handle and follow them around. Kinda like CSI? One place I would never frequent is MySpace...

I use 2 different handles. ToadHill the name of my farm on this and other tractor and country forums; and Tree Wizard,my business name, on forestry related forums. I guess it keeps this old mind from mixing up where I am.

I use one of 2 different screennames. My "Farmwithjunk" is used MOST of the time, but another site I frequent already had a "Farm w/ Junk" by the time I got there, so I had to come up with something else to prevent confusion. That one, MF Poor, followed me to a couple sites where people already knew my "other name". It doesn't take too long with ANY name for me to identify myself. The avatar usually does the trick.

Yes. I'll fess up... my alter ego on other boards is RossMoad.

the only other board where I use a different name is an atv board. All others, I use this name. It's all I can do to keep up with myself . I would not be able to keep up with several different names
