I use one of 2 different screennames. My "Farmwithjunk" is used MOST of the time, but another site I frequent already had a "Farm w/ Junk" by the time I got there, so I had to come up with something else to prevent confusion. That one, MF Poor, followed me to a couple sites where people already knew my "other name". It doesn't take too long with ANY name for me to identify myself. The avatar usually does the trick.

That's not so bad.. at least you stick to a similar deal with your MF logo and handle.

I've seen some really of fthe wall differences though on some forums..

As someone else mentioned.. I try to keep the same or similar handle.. just for my ease / laziness. In places where SG is taken.. I usually stick on my zip code.. for instance.. yahoo forums..e tc.

I use the same handle for everything even on the CB. The abbreviation goes back to the old 8 bit days. Otherwise, I think it is pretty self explanatory.

I don't sign on to too many boards but I have yet to find another user.

Since I don't actively farm any longer (with the exception of doing a little hayin', which I suppose is still farmin') I have started several times to switch all my usernames to the "MF Poor" since it's faster to type. It has a nice fit, here at the "Poor Farm".

Trust factor and identity theft come into play for my handles.

I cannot afford to be on CNN, AFN, NIS, the Wall Street Journal or google in my position.

There are subtle ways to communicate, and the internet is not one of them.

As most of us do, I frequent quite a few other boards.. many of them tractor.. or at least antique or related.. some utterly unrelated...

I've run into a good many people from other forums.. all using different handles. Many times I find people on very similar forums.. using very different handles... That always made me wonder.. why have different handles.. aside for the obvious issues of a handle being taken... of which people usually use a similar handle.. or alternator spelling... etc..

I know of a few such situations where different handles are in use, and the 'other' handles were available.. so it has always made me wonder.. In a few cases.. i have noticed the difference due to unique info in profiles.. or perhaps a unique custom avatar.. etc..

any opinions on this?

I've always wonderd if this was so a user could get away with something at one forum.. and not be 'tagged' at another..etc.... IE.. like being a jerk in one place / type of forum ( perhaps an unmoderated / flame forum).. and then have an alter ego somewhere else???

Chris,

People change handles for different reasons, some to get away from being labeled this and that as you suggested and are not at ease with their personalities or sure of themselves.. I just don't know if they realize their IP address stays the same or couple of different ones based on the # of computers they used to get on the board. This forum business is very new to me and have not done it for a long time. I'm also member to a European soccer forum as well as I like the game. I think people select handles to be somewhat appropriate to the area of their interest, same as "farmwithjunk", that tells a lot about himr and the maturity and knowledge he expresses in his posts shows that that the guys is every bit who he portrays. For you, I yet to find a advise that was less than "Sound",so the name fits like a perfect glove. For yours truly with such a limited tractor experience, that has basically been a city slicker all my life, had to find something something that I strive to be as I grow older, a farmer like gentleman that does it just for pure joy. By the way I live in Johnson County , Kansas hence JC and "Jetro" is like my hero "Jethro Bodine Clampett, LOL", a country boy that strives to be a sophisticated city slicker.:D :D :D :D

JC,

I've noticed this too and have had some awkward moments with posting on other sites before I realized that the person was a memeber here that I'm familiar with. When I first started out, I had a different name for each site that I went to. Then I had some computer issues and those names didn't appear automatically when I went to those sites. I had too many names and couldn't remember who I was!!!! LOL

Now I keep it simple. If somebody wants to find me, they can easy enough no matter what handle I come up with.

I frequently hit 2 other forums and the screenname is different on all 3 I go on. No real reason other than the fact it personalizes me to that particular forum. I.E., I wouldn't be "bashababyseal" over on a PETA forum, nor would I want to be "Mackdaddypimp" over on a christian site...

Probably stupid examples, but I haven't had a cup of java yet this morning. You get the gist of it.

Sorry to inform you that both names are already taken at both sites.
