So Chris, what is currently happening with your BIL's truck? Engine swap? Has anyone taken it apart yet? I'm curious to know what the specific mode of failure was (beside the general lack of maintenance).

Right now its sitting at my friends shop. I gave him the filter I cut open and he was astonished. He could not believe it still ran. He said the metal was mostly from the timing chain and of course bearing, lobes, journsls, ect. He thinks all the issues started in the timing chain area though.

My BIL has a second vehicle so its just sitting while they try to get Ford to warranty it.

The Variable cam timing works off of oil pressure and so do the timing chain tensioners. I can't remember off the top of my head how much oil pressure it takes to operate the VCT. I imagine it was extremely low on oil pressure so the timing chains were probably slapping around really bad making a lot of noise and the VCT could not operate properly which will make noise.

Not sure. After I changed the oil the pressure gauge was right in the middle.

That's because Ford doesn't use an oil pressure gauge. It's an on/off switch that just grounds with any pressure over about 8psi. This makes the gauge go to the midpoint.

As far as I know GM is the only domestic or otherwise that still uses a proper functioning gauge.

this doesn't 'appear' to be how it really works... at least on my fords. at startup, the op comes up within a sec or so, hits lower mid of guage, in another couple sec's, hit mid or a hair above.. pretty much stays there.

if it was really an open /closed issue.. seems the gauge would hit it's mark as soon as it came up and not adjust after another second? unless the gauge is some how settling...

ot saying you are wrong on this.. just saying it appears to act different inthe 3 powerstrokes I have..
