I know this sounds stupid but will a 2,4d application kill clover? I have clover in my grass hay fields and would like to keep it but really need to get rid of some weeds in there.

Yes. 2,4D will kill anything.
Anything that will kill "weeds" will kill clover.
(I believe both those statements are true).
That's why we're building a wick applicator. We'll lose some clover and other good stuff, but we HAVE to get rid of the dog bane or it's going to take over all our fields. It already has taken over some folks' fields.

I've just constructed a blanket wiper based on the plans found at this link:

Having used a wick system before I'm getting better results with the larger area of the blanket.
