We are beginning to have a bad problem with hemp dogbane around here. It is reported that using Rounnd-up with a "wick applicator" works well in controlling.
Does anyone know where to get one or instructions for building one?
Located in WV near Ohio Valley.
Thanks in advance.

I'm confused. It looks interesting but can anyone give me more info. How does it work? Does it save money when applying Roundup and Crossbow? How wide can I string them together using a Kubota B7510HST. How much does it cost. The web site is really short on info.

Thanks Mike. The tip on googling "weed wiper" did the trick. I'd been looking for "wick applicator."

HZ, A wick applicator or "weed wiper," brushes the herbicide onto the weeds. It is used when the weeds are taller that the crop you DON'T want to kill.
We have dogbane (a type oof milk weed) in our hay fields. If we spray, at best, we kill all the clover.

Call or email Greenleaf for prices if you want wicks & fittings, they're friendly to deal with. Cotton/nylon braided rope will work fine for a hand held. Drill the pipe for a snug fit, stuff the rope end in an inch or so, & hot glue around the edge to keep it in.
Basically a reservior of PVC pipe with overlapping wicks on the bottom. The mounted versions usually horizontal across the path of travel and are height adjustable. The wicks stay wet from the reservoir & swipe across everything high enough for contact leaving a smear of chemical. The height is adjusted to pass above non-target plants. A hand held is used as a dabber on target plants. Both use less then spray and are a more controlled application. The reservoir can be simply filled via a fill cap in a pipe tee of filled constantly from a pump/ gravity tank for large acreage. Front, rear, or trailer mounted are available. I made one with side booms that angle up 30 degrees for snowmobile trails. Hangs over the edges of the trail to get hanging plants like blackberries & alders. The supply end is filled via a small pump & the boom drains back constantly to a tank/ pump suction so it does not become pressurized.

Woodworking tools (drill, saw )are all you need to build one from pvc pipe. Supports can be wood , plastic, metal depending on the size/strength involved. Obviously a 6" x 20' pipe filled with liquid would require a stout mount where a 1 1/2" x 4' would need less. Google weed wiper for examples.
Good luck, Mike

Thanks folks!

Green Leaf was truly a pleasure to deal with. Forget about the prices on their web site if you call and tell them you're a farmer. . . huge discounts!
We'll begin construction on the community weed wiper when the parts get here in a few days.

I know this sounds stupid but will a 2,4d application kill clover? I have clover in my grass hay fields and would like to keep it but really need to get rid of some weeds in there.

Yes. 2,4D will kill anything.
Anything that will kill "weeds" will kill clover.
(I believe both those statements are true).
That's why we're building a wick applicator. We'll lose some clover and other good stuff, but we HAVE to get rid of the dog bane or it's going to take over all our fields. It already has taken over some folks' fields.
